I always get the best computer help on here. Is there a built-in FTP client in Windows XP? If so, where? If not, where can I get a good, free FTP client online?

Yes. Just go to 'Start', the click on 'Run...' and enter "ftp" + the IP address of the destination. It's text-based (i.e., no GUI...).

Yes.

Start / Run / type in "FTP" without the quotes, press enter.

The very limited, command-line based solution has already been posted. If you want a truer "Windows" experience, then I highly recommend WebDrive. It isn't free, but it makes any FTP site appear as a "drive letter" that you can access and use just like your local hard disk (just a little slower). Extremely convenient and intuitive...

Yeah, but I'm cheap. I want free. Plus, I'm only going to have a tiny webspace here. Any free ones?

No experience, but AceFTP looks like it has potential...

My favorite Windows GUI FTP client is SmartFTP, has full drag and drop capability and integrates wonderfully. Great proxy and queuing features too.

URL: www.smartftp.com/download/

Oops, sorry for the repeat lenk

In a pinch, you can just use a web browser.

ftp://login:password@:port/

You can omit login and password for anonymous FTP, and omit the port for port 21. Most browsers support drag and drop.

Look up Filezilla. It's a free FTP Program. You could also look up WSFTP, which works nicely, but isn't free.

Windows Explorer/Internet Explorer is also an FTP Client. Just type in ftp://ftp.. and you should access the site. It allows both up and downloading of files. It's not very decent, in fact as an FTP program it is slow, but it does work.

Everyone is off base, he actually wants to set up an ftp site as you can see by this quote " Yeah, but I'm cheap. I want free. Plus, I'm only going to have a tiny webspace here. Any free ones?" just google ftp server win xp and you will find free/cheep ftp servers.

I'd have to agree with Nelzie. FileZilla is free, and good.
