The second one is much better. Please use that lense wisely. Don't use it just for bugs...:-) |

Not to be nitpicky but it's spelled lens not lense. :)

Nifty pictures. There is nothing wrong with photographing insects. They provide a wondrous microworld of shapes and activities. As a technical note, was there enough light for you to have stopped down to get more depth of field? |

BTW, I do like the picture on the right more. It has less noise and just feels right. That Sigma lens produces some crisp images. And I also have nothing against shooting photos of bugs. In fact, my original photo for the MacroIV challenge was of an ant on a palm frond. :)
(fixed typo)

Theodor - it is a fun lens, isn't it?
The trick I have to get over with macro-shooting insects is that the little buggers just keep moving. You've got to move with them and this makes framing and lighting a little difficult (at least for me). The cement background isn't too appealing. I seem to have my best luck when I find the critters on branches of palms or something to that effect - elevated and green or brown. The insect's surroundings will just be more attractive - plus, you can get a great dark background, illuminating the insect in question. Having said that, however, I have a really difficult time making these pictures work. Again, mainly because they do just keep moving!!! Anyhow, just my opinion.
The second one is clearly also my favorite. Better framing, better representation of PowerAnt. My only discomfort is with the background. Good luck with the lens! And hope to see more soon!

Good shots Theodor.
I`m thinking about getting this lens/lense. Could you tell me if your 2 shots are cropped or is this the full image scale.
Also how far away was the end of the lens to the subject.
At the moment the only macro i can do is with my sigma 70-300apo2.
This was taken with my sigma 70-300apo but i had to crop it to only 500 pixels square and if i tried to print it out it would be about the size of a stamp.
So basiclly could the sigma 105mm fill the frame with a fly at a reasonable distance away as not to disturb it.
Mark.... |

i had to crop it because the ant kept moving and i could not get close enough another thing is that this was the first time i used this lense ever.. but trust me it is far beter than i have ever dreamt of. you wont be dissapointed. to give you an idea i can fill the full frame with a quarter... amazing |
