If I am going to be resizing (to meet the 640 requirement) but my file is currently in TIFF format (or the Nikon Raw equivalent), should I resize before or after converting to JPEG? Which method will lose the least information?

Resize, then save as a JPEG.

Yes, just remember that whenever you save as a JPEG file, you permanently lose some of the image detail. Just how much depends on the quality settings.
If you save as JPEG first, here's what you'd be doing:
1. Start with a TIFF file.
2. Save as JPEG file.
3. Resize to smaller size.
4. Save as JPEG file for upload to DPC.
The image has been saved as JPEG twice, which loses more quality each time. So, just remember you never want to save as JPEG except for the final shot. Any editing is best performed from a lossless (TIFF, PNG, BMP, etc.) copy or from the original camera JPEG (as good as it gets when shooting JPEGs). |
