I took a picture while visiting SF and I thought it was decent picture, I then softened it a bit in photoshop. I think I have been looking at it too long. Is this a good picture or does it need something more to make it a great picture.

I am pretty new here and the feed back I have been getting is great. So much that i am going to attempt my first Challenge this week on the feet competition. Thank you for comments in advance.

i'm no expert.

Hi Dave,
I think the softness of this image works well. I also like the positioning of the birds and boat featured within the image.

Beautiful scene Dave, definitely too much softening, looks a little too false. I like my landscapes to be as pin sharp as possible, but that is only my opinion of course,
nice shot..

I like this image a lot! I would much rather be there than here at work right now! LOL.

I would try to boost the contrast just a bit. This will bring out the colors a bit more. Seems a little washed out to me, could be my work monitor. Other than that I like your composition and I agree with Peecee about being sharp instead of soft.

Cheers....Martin

It's a nice scene, but it lacks interest because it's missing a subject. It makes a great background though.

And as the others said, too soft.

Wow, I totally disagree with "lacks subject". This is one of those prints that needs to be printed *big*. If you have the resolution for it, go for an 11x14" or even 16x20" print.

At that size, what immediately jumps out at you are the boat and the birds. I think this photo was beautifully composed. The water line works well. The position of the birds and the boat in opposite corners totally draws things out. And even the clouds come into play in harmonizing the lines.

I also, unlike some, happen to like the soft effect you've got. I might wish for slightly sharper birds, but everything else just makes this picture "dreamy". I'd love to be there!

Congratulations on a fine composition!

Maybe try B&W, and up the contrast to produce the effect of a red polariser??

but I agree this would look fantastic in large print. The small jpeg does nothing for it.

You might think about going even softer or with a painting-type filter, at least for the parts above the water, or else sharper. Seems kind of in-between right now.

Something I don't like about the color/tone of the hills. I think I'd try separating this into horizontal zones (water, land, clouds, sky) with masks and tweak the contrast/color individually. For example, I used 3-4 masks to go from
this
to this
and eventually to this
