the above could be waved for the challenge and made to state that you can't show someone actualy smoking but can show cigarettes etc.

How could I forget these from the fires we had in Southern California back in October 2003!
Shot from the roof of my family room.
Shot from the roof of my family room.
My front yard to the right
My house on the right
The valley as viewed from about 5 miles West
We were lucky. Many weren't.

4.2 You will not use the DPChallenge.com Service to post content or to design, manufacture, market or sell a Product that.....
(viii) encourages or depicts the use of drugs, alcohol or cigarettes
This has been bent (or overlooked) in the past... I don't think the intent or essence of the rule is to prohibit such images with a true photographic intent, but SC can always weigh in.

The whole category will be a gigantic pain for us, having to arbitrate whether such pictures violate the "letter or spirit" of that rule ... |

I like this idea. I have been wanting to photograph smoke, but haven't gotten around to doing it yet.
Here is one from a recent challenge that I liked (not mine):
I think it should be limited to smoke. If you include steam, wouldn't you also need to include other forms of water vapor (such as clouds). The challenge gets far too broad -- when comparing different things, it helps if they are at least remotely similar.
An interesting twist would be to not allow the source of the smoke to be seen, the composition consisting of nothing but smoke. Might get a little old after voting on a few hundred entries though.
David
Not sure if the above image is smoke or vapor, but it is cool looking.

Smoke (and/or vapor) makes for an interesting subject.
I had fun making this one for the "Habits" challenge:
I used incense to get a thicker feel on the smoke and created the ring with a paper tube and the bulb from a turkey baster. Woke up the next morning with a very sore throat and a rather interesting smelling house....
I do think the challenge description should be very specific as, to me, there is a huge difference between vapor and smoke. "Smoke" might be also applied to under-water subjects such as the inky clouds produced by octopi. I would really hate to spend a week here sifting through the "it isn't smoke" ... "it is, too" threads. |

This is sulphurous vapor/smoke from one of my friendly neighborhood volcanoes. LOL... it stinks pretty bad....the vapor, that is.

Why don't you add to the description of the challenge then that cigarettes can't be used in the shot? |

Ya it has to exclude any tobacco product or there will be comments and scoring all over the place by people who will belive it is a violation wether it is ruled out or not.
Of course wild fires started by the improper disposal of said banned tobacco products should be allowed

With all this discussion, perhaps someone can write an actual challenge title/description which we can add to the pool. |

How about....
SMOKE: Take a picture in which smoke plays an important role in the composition. The depiction of tobacco products, including but not limited to cigars, cigarettes and pipes, is prohibited. For the purposes of this challenge smoke is defined as "The vaporous system made up of small particles of carbonaceous matter in the air, resulting mainly from the burning of organic material, such as wood or coal." And does not include water vapor or steam.
(Gah! I shoulda been a lawyer.)

i know tobacco smoke is a very touchy subject on this website, since it is not really illegal, yet still against the dpc rules, but it can make some very nice pictures. can we allow exhaling shots, or use the smoke of tobacco products, without necessarily showing the product? |

to respond to your comment KV, the face is actually being reflected in the window that's behind the cigar. the sun was illuminating the smoke directly and - as you correctly assume - the dirt on the window :) |

WOW! That's very cool - the face is so slight as to almost be overlooked and yet, if one looks for more than a few seconds, which this image deserves, one spots it and it becomes absolutely key to the image as a whole...

Maybe if you dangle an earring off that upper wisp in the center it will reinforce the repeating pattern ... :) |
