Hi all! This is one of my macro outtakes and I would be really interested to hear what you think of it. Thank you!

I like the simplicity of the photo. I would prefer to see a little more detail (like Jacko's work).
It's something I haven't been able to achieve yet either! I'm pretty much convinced now that the sharpness that is expected of a macro is very much dependent on the lens you are using.

I too like the simplicity of the photo, I'm a big fan of flat black backgrounds, and it serves this picture well.
I agree, some more detail may help, but I think what the problem truly is, is that their is too much going on in this picture. My eyes are screaming for a clear point to look at. At the moment everything is in the same focus, the same light, and the same color, leaving a very bland statement. The subject has lovely lines, perhaps getting futher below the plant, with a wide angled lens, with a wide aperature focussed on the upmost point would provide a more pointed image.
Even if you simply cropped more of the bottom part of the plant out, and perhaps slightly blurred whats left of the bottom, leaving just the top point in focus, that would solve this problem and leave you with a superb image. Or you could even burn the bottom part, to create some variation in the lighting!
Overall, a good image, with some excellent possibilities.

I do not know how you shot this. Being that the object is fixed or still, I would certainly close my f stop to the max because what truly hurts this beautiful study is the focus. Since it is so outgoing in red, the viewer will want to see all the texture he can. Right now the focus appears at the mid intersection. If the dof fails you at this close distance I would back up a bit, this will extend the dof. |

The focus and detail are there, but something doesn't work for me. Two things come to mind: 1) it might work better with a little fill light on the left, to highlight and provide more of the lower plant portion details; 2) A bit more of the left side of the plant might balance it more and put the tip in the sweet spot per the rule of thirds. Just my own aesthetic opinions!

Like some of the other posts, my main wish is for more detail for the specific challenge of macro. |
