I was just reading the "Wanna improve your photography" thread started by jmsetzler and it got me thinking.
There are lots of MEMBERS like myself who struggle through and learn as we go and pick up tips from comments and reading but there really is nothing better than having someone more experienced who can offer unbiased advice and who would answer even your stupidest questions, a Mentor?
Mentors are used at many work places and in sporting codes. Do you think it would be something that could also work here. I think there would be lots of beginners but would there be a few experienced photographers who would want to be apart of something like this? I know we have the forum but I was thinking on a more personal level 1 on 1.
I know that I would be very interested if it was something that was available! Any thoughts?

There have been a few threads on this topic. Here's a link to one of them (others inside).

I have found that I can learn alot from just PMing someone who's work I admire. If they are receptive to the discussion I modestly ask if they would be willing to occasionally critique my work.
If they aren't comfortable with it, I don't press the issue and move on. Although I don't have any one mentor per se, I feel I have learned alot this way.
Hope this helps,

I'd certainly be interested (either as a mentor or a "mentee"). Since I don't have any friends or family members active in the site, it's hard to get feedback on concepts or photos. Though I'm not in the top tier yet, I think I'm finally starting to "get it."
A buddy challenge would be fun, too, but a logistical nightmare. |

i like this idea although I dont know many people who could take the time to be a full-time mentor in the truest sense of the word. |

Just checked the web site and its still working, I added my details on it and all seems fine but not sure how active it is.
Its great to see that these things have been looked at in the past no matter how successfull they have been.

I know I couldn't mentor a ton of people since I have a busy photography business, but I wouldn't mind helping one or two people.
That is...if they are interested in portraiture with natural lighting.

I'll take on a mentee if anyone would like.
AOL - therandian1
MSN - mantonino@hotmail.com (much more frequent)
I would use the same criteria as before - no ribbons, only 1 or two scores over 6 and a lower than 5.2 average. If this meets you, PM me and we'll talk.

One thing I do feel is that if people are going to mentor through here that is should be reserved for full members only.
No offence to registered members but full members are the ones that support the site and I don't think there would be enough Mentors to match up to mentees in any case.

Thanks for the link. Yes, the site is still up and running and working perfectly. Much for the same reason that the original manual-processed Photo Friends stopped, the site is fairly inactive mainly because interest is, in all honesty, limited.
I think a lot of the reason is the site isn't particularly well promoted on DPC. Maybe it would be possible to offer a loose affiliation between DPC in the form of a link?? |
