Hi;
I´m consider to buy a D70. I´ve read many reviews, including dpreview and steve´s. But I had a question that no one has published yet.
Is D70 body builded in plastic or metalic flavor?
Many of us (DPCers) are D70 owners. Then, please, let me know your opinion about this body, and quit my doubt over the construction material.

Thanks;

The body is plastic, but the build quality seems to be top notch. Very rugged feel to it. No problems with mine to date.

And about the mirror lockup? Anyone had noticed some trouble with this lack?

I just went out and bought the Nikon D70. I just love it! It is a very nice camera. Yes, it has a very rugged feel to it. It is bigger than I expected but I liked that. When I held it, I knew it was for me:) I feel it has everything I need in a slr camera.

Evidently Nikon addresses the issue of mirror slap with a mirror vibration damping system, making mirror lock up unnecessary.

I have no idea how well it works, but it's a good idea.

I've done a lot of night photography with my D70, and haven't had trouble getting sharp exposures even in the worst range for mirror slap, around 1/8 - 2 sec. I've used a pretty lightweight tripod when I traveled, and even then it was fine.

The body is made of polycarbonate, which is virtually indestructible. It's what bulletproof glass is made of. It feels solid and well made, and when I was touring Europe last month, I got compliments on my camera from other photographers wherever I went. Not to mention I had no problems throughout the ~10000 frames I took on the trip. I love the camera.

GoodEnd,

There are many camera systems that will provide you with GREAT photos for many years. The D70 is certainly one of them. Also the 10d. and on into some higher end price points.

Your choice of lenses will ultimately impact your photographic limitations more that a body. Some prefer Canon glass while others like Nikkor. Sigma produces lenses for both and their EX series is quite good.

Good luck with your research.

i LOVE my d70. if your only concern is the body, there's really no need to worry. the polycarbonate construction is very solid. the mirror lockup is definitely not an issue with shake. i've taken quite a few long exposures, well-lit night scenes on a tripod etc, mirror-slap has never caused any shake for me.

I think that right now the D70 is the best value for the buck out there, but of course i'm a little biased. if you can afford it, go for the kit with the 18-70dx lense, it's a great piece of glass and does well as a good starter lense for that camera. good luck!

I see the Nikon has some of the Canon Digital Rebel issues licked, but what about a comparison of noise, and light sensitivity. I personally dislike noise in my high ISO photos (which on my camera means anything over 100). I have neatimage pro, but the real solution is little or no noise in the first place.

Anyone care to compare the CMOS based Canons and the D70 on noise and light sensitivity?

Thanks in advance.

You can prolly find some measurebator who will tell you all about the details, but honestly I doubt you will notice. The real issue is how does it feel in your hand to shoot? Are the controls intuitive to you? will you be comfortable holding the camera for an extended time etc?
Go find both and compare.

The low level of noise with either camera compared to your G2 will blow you away, I know it did when I got my 10D. Even at ISO 800 it's not bad.

I saw a comparison of the (i think) D100/D70/300D on //www.dpreview.com

have a search and see.
