Basically... However, the skylight filter likely has a pinkish tint (blocks UV and excess blue) while the basic UV simply cuts UV (blocking blue/purple cast). The brand and model of filter has an effect here. As well, if the filter is coated, multicoated, uncoated all have an effect on other aspects of performance.
For controlled environments (indoors, little chance of accidental damage) I've been shooting without filter and found the images to pop just a bit more (better contrast, better color).
Your images are only as good as the cheapest piece of glass between the source and the sensor, so if you do choose to use a filter, make sure it's the highest quality you can reasonably afford. In other words, if you spend $1500 on a lens and all the quality glass in that lens, why put a cheap piece of glass over the end? |
