For the life of me i dont understand it!
NO matter what challenge i enter the votes are all over the place. I can sit there and calculate every vote that comes in and ill get a 9 and then a 2 and then an 8 then a 1. ITS CRAZY. For the blue challenge I have entered my best studio shot i have ever taken. I mean i can tell if i shot a crap pic and i can tell if i shot a good pic. This one is Real good and i have people telling me that this is a great shot. All i have to say is THEN WHY AM I GETTING 1's ... lol. Its blue for starters. NO blue shot should get a 1 or a 2 ,3 for that matter. This is my RANT and you dont need to reply if you dont want to Heck you dont even need to read it. I just had to get it off my chest. To everyone that have read this far .. thanks and keep up the good work.
Cheers

Happy thoughts, happy thoughts.
You should be happy that some people like some of your pics. Some people have pics that are liked by hardly anyone except their mothers or their dogs.

Have a cold Molson and realize everyone else's opinion doesn't matter all that much. I really like your work for what it's worth.

It doesn't matter how good your image is, or how much you think it is the best photo you will ever take. There are always people who will vote it low. It is all part of DPC, you just have to accept it, and there is nothing you can do about it ..... |

Gilles, don't let it get you down. Sometimes, I think it's the mark of a more artistic, "edgy" picture that scores like you say yours do - people either tend to love them or hate them. I know it's wrong to generalize but young men tend to take this type of pictures. My pictures tend to all be so middle of the road - everyone votes a 4, 5 or 6. They tend to be pretty traditional as I'm a fairly traditional 49 year old lady. My son, who is just a year younger than you tells me my pictures are boring and need to be more edgy.
You will go on to great things with your pictures - mark my words.

It's pointless trying to work out the minds of the voters. Enter the best image you can for a challenge and just hope that more people like it than not. You cant make everyone like it, and you certainly cant avoid 1's no matter what you do.

Interesting that you would get advice for dealing with low scores from kiwiness and Jacko. FYI guys, this is what a two looks like: 2
I agree with them, though. Five of the six current ribbon winners have a 1 among their votes. I wonder if it's the same voter on each? Calculating each score is pointless. I started with a 4.000 and took second for Album Cover. You've got a very respectable average score, and you should be having fun and learning regardless. Just have fun. If you score a 3, I promise not to point fingers and laugh.

Technicaly perfect photos will always get low scores because some people vote based on their "taste" or wether the photo is their "style" or not. Not that I vote that way :) |

The best advise is to look at the update objectively. Remember it is not over until the Fat Lady Sings. Never mind the ups and downs, you must wait until the counter reaches at least 100 in order to make a reliable projection. Keep in mind that nobody knows whose picture they are voting on. There are some voters that vote good images down but these voters affect us all. Keep in mind that this is a problem which embraces us all. The final verdict speaks. I thought I had a good album entry until I saw the others. They started me with two's and I just came about last, however, there were some outstanding entries which kicked my ass. No complain here. We take the good with the bad. |

I'm done. I give up. If one of the two pics I have entered doesn't end above a 5.5 (they're at 5.0 and 4.7) I will just take pics for myself. No, they're not BAD, but I thought they were much better...Oh, and I can't get anyone to review my photos that I posted in the Individual discussion forum...1 person...how sad with 102 views...*sighs* I want to improve but I can't see anywhere else to go unless I take a class and I can't fit it into my schedule at school this fall, so there it is. I'm gonna take them for myself and if I come back and see that it fits a challenge, then I'll enter, but no more TRYING to fit the challenge, those of mine that I do almost always do the worst.
Later. I'm off to finish editing pictures for my friends and fellow cosplayers who want to see my pics and give me feedback.

I always assume if they mark me high, they must have great taste. If they mark me low, their cat is playing on the keyboard. How many blue ribbon winners got off with nothing below 4? very, very few. And those are much better than what I submit. |

Exactly, Sometimes I think photos' are voted down by people that are envious of other peoples talent. No shot deserves a 1 unless it is a photo of a white piece of paper. The photographer must had put some effort into taking the shot even if it was only to push the button.
It's about time some people had a good hard think about their voting or this site will become useless as a learning tool.
My rant for the day. Thanks guy's I feel better now. (Medication kicked in) |

Ami Yuy keep batting away and look carefully at each entry when you vote. There are lessons in seeing how others solved the problem, but you must study the entries. Look carefully at those attempts that use creative lighting. Study the compositions. I tell you there is no better place to learn than by observing. There is a wealth of knowledge in these challenges. Separate those that record and those that create interesting interpretation. Eventually it will come to you. |

And I repeat: people that vote one's and two's are not very talented unless they are just being spiteful. If they are they only hurt themselves because they are spitting on talent and this will only bite them in the end. They will not progress. |

My time here, Ive learned that if it looks digital artish, then a lot of the times it's going to win.
I dont remember the last time I saw a "photoish" looking picture win.

Have a look at the stats for the winning image for DPC Album Cover. It tells a story.
1 - 1
2 - 2
3 - 5
4 - 6
14 voters gave it what I would consider below average scores. No way you can explain or understand it. To me it's one of the best images I have seen on this site.
But as the winner himself put it "It doesn't matter how good your image is, or how much you think it is the best photo you will ever take. There are always people who will vote it low. It is all part of DPC, you just have to accept it, and there is nothing you can do about it ....."
You just keep doing what you love doing. High score or a ribbon on DPC is a bonus.

Man, I give up on tring to figure out how you all figure out your scores by votes...that would drive me crazy....It's bad enough to see my score just bounce up and down....there are many voters that vote different by tastes, emotions, technical, and just some are rude or just perhaps fair too...it's all just fun for me...However, it does get nerve racking to see a low score and thinking, man I worked hard and long hours to set up, find, think, study and edit if needed to my shot...Not to forget uploading information and story.... |

Thank you Rich. Im sure we could comb the lowest scoring shots and get a few "digital artish" shot to balance it out. |
