If I was going to take a trip like this I would like staying in tents (more fun, closer to nature, cheaper, MORE FUN ) and staying in Iceland in early jule, because people from all over the world loves the bright nights which are not so bright in august. If everyone would be driving a large 4x4 we could visit all the most beutiful places on Iceland in 10-14 days. |

Think the shelter mentioned are the emergency shelters and are open but not ment for common usage unless in emergency.
I almost reached the Icelands highest peak this weekend but had to turn away because of the crazy wether at the top but still it one of the most fun I´ve had in my life and also one of the most difficulte thing.
The peak is just few hundred meters behind that rock (can not be seen because of the snowstorm behind). It doesnt look that bad there but belive me it was windy and cold.
If you are interested in such adventures take a look at this:
Hofsnes and montainguides
Exspecially recomend the former link. The main guide there is one of the best I´ve traveled with.

I could maybe go for a few days, june sounds better for my parts. Could maybe answer some questions or check out things for you non-icelanders.
I think garlic is right about the emergency shelters, they are for emergencies, not travelers for summer travel. But there are other shelters in the highlands that have no service, people leave some fee in a jar after their stay, maybe some people misunderstood the fee-jar and think this is free (it's not expensive, and might be full of other people during the summer).
One thing, car rentals can be a bit expensive here in iceland, especially for 4x4 (I think luminous landscape talkes about this). Maybe the "insider" at Icelandair can cut some kind of a deal on cars.

I'm in. My birthday is in July and I like to travel during my birthday. However, I'm not so sure about the tents....but I guess if majority rules, I'll have no choice.

Me too. Would be fun to sail from Michigan, through the St. Lawrence Seaway, then across the Atlantic to England, then up to Iceland and back. Hmmmmm.

No, I won't let you come. Icelandic nature is my only chance of winning a ribbon!
But seriously, you are welcome. Maybe we can organize something, even if it wouldn't be more than a beer and barbicue gettogether.
J.
(Psst! And check out light.is, something could happen there soon)

What a cool idea! If it's going to happen in July, by all means let me know! Maybe the folks who really want to do this could start like a group email sorta thing. I would have never known about it if "Cloud" hadn't bumped in with his question.
Now the camping thing I'm not so sure about... never been camping and I'm not to keen on starting now! :-D Don't get me wrong, I love nature! I just don't wanna sleep in it! |

I wish I was going to be there on Sept 24th!
Sigur Ros
Although, it would be incredible to experience twelve hours of perfect photograph lighting and I guess summer would be better for that!

On the first weekend of July every year for the past few years I have went on a photo trip among other photographers in a photoclub here in Reykjavik, Iceland. We go to different places every year. I will try to add some photos to my folio from this year's phototrip soon, It was a great weekend! The photoclub counts about 60 people, usually there are somewhere around 10 of us that go on each photo trip. Through the years we have managed to figure out the "best" times for post-scheduled phototrips at both summer time and winter time. And as I said, the first weekend of July was chosen for summer trips and first or second weekend of February is our yearly winter trip. Sometimes we go on weekend trips in the spring. Also we go on few one-day trips together, a one day trip on the first weekend of october for the autumn colors, a one day photowalk at Christmas time, a one day trip in august. We also schedule one day competitions among us 2-3 times a year.
July is definately the best month (in average) for summer photo trips. When the club goes on those yearly summer photo trips the first weekend of July, we go on our own cars, 2-3 people in each car and everyone pays equally for the fuel. We take our sleeping bags with us and there are a lot of places offering sleepingbag accommadations for $20-30 a night. I would suggest sleepingbag accommadation, although the tents are good idea when the weather is good, but then the weather is unpredictable and I think if some of you are really planning on a photo trip here in Iceland together I think tents are not for everyone (I, personally like it).
I've helped planning few photo trips for the last five years in the club and when we do, we always have at least one backup plan and decide to go where the weather forecast is best. We had two backup plans this summer, luckily it was best for the #1 plan this summer.
If you are really into planning a photo trip in July next year, I could mention it to the other board members of the club to have the next summer photo trip open. Otherwise it's only for the paying members. We have discussed it to go on the next trip by bus that we all rent together. It would be interesting to have it a open one and then you, the foreigners, and other non members here in Iceland could join us. It could be a good start to your trip, I doubt that we would plan a 7-10 day photo trip for the club, but maybe I'm wrong.
It has also been discussed a little in the club to go to the Faroe Islands (it's placed in the Atlantic between Iceland and Ireland/UK) for the next summer trip, but I think this idea of having an open photo trip can be popular also.
Just let me know if you like this idea.

ps. you can see some of my icelandic nature/landscape photos in my folio: //www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio.php?USER_ID=10390&collection_id=4244
I will add more soon (excuse the large border, it wasn't added for dpc uploads).

I agree with everything except the drinking part, but that's just me, you're welcome to drink if you so desire. I'm really interested in this. I was already planning on going to the Faroe Islands anyways so maybe I'll spend 1 week there and 1 week in Iceland. I think if this is really gonna happen we have to start planning for real soon.
June
BTW, I'm only an E3, so please no Ritz or even Hilton...I'm on a budget and Iceland is VERY expensive!

Anybody know of the best way to go cheap? |

Well, swimming there would be the cheapest way to get there. Might be a hazardous way to go. |

I should have mentioned that I know a guy who can walk on water and he's planning on coming along. He'll carry me...
Edit: Actually, I would drive to Boston from Ontario, Canada and fly from there. Stop in Iceland for a few days and then on to Germany. Then do the whole thing backwards to get back home.

The best way to come here cheap is usually with Iceland Express. But they just fly from Copenhagen and London.
I think you can find tickets for about USD 150 both ways.

Some friends of mine are planning a Mediterranean cruise in May 2005 but who knows. If that doesn't work out, I'm all over a trip to Iceland! I've always wanted to go there seeing how I fly over it all the time on my way to Deutschland. Other places I want to visit: Ireland, Scotland, Austria, Hungary and many other places. I'll watch this thread and update as I know more.
