The local camera store let me try a 100-400L IS lens on my camera today. They even let me take it outside and take a couple of shots (heavily escorted of course).... Then they made me give it back.... Life is not the same. (Would someone buy - say - 1500 of my pictures so I can buy one?? I can probably scrape up the other $100)

After seeing that I can't help thinking : Anybody wants to be a professional photographer still ? Creative and exciting job isn't it ?

Oh it all depends on what you do professionally. Personally, I wouldn't mind the chance to go to and shoot the convention at all and I like doing most photojournalism assignments. If that's not for you; you can still be at least somewhat creative doing portraits, composites, team photos, etc. You can also sell prints professionally (gallery) or sell stock photography which probably allows you the most creativity.

Granted, I would expect that most of those guys are probably not very passionate about photography.... they are putting money on the table though. :)

Granted, if you get a chance to walk around and select those small scenes and isolate people/events which really show the atmosphere, that would be nice, but just sitting in a box with a large tele, getting all the same images the people next to you also get ....

Then again.... thinking of my current job ......I want to be a photographer , get me out of here !!!! LOL
