I have been reading about the visual appeal of using analogous and complementary color schemes.
I have a question for any artists out there:
Is there an analogous or complemntary color to brown?

What colors typically look good with brown in your experience(s)?
FYI, this question was spurred by the recent Chocolate Challenge.

I'm not an artist or an expert, but in regards to the chocolate challenge I found green to be very appealing next to brown. Maybe it's a mixture of seeing brown/green together in nature or that one is more vibrant than the other, or even that green is often associated with mint and so brown chocolate and mint are a good combination.

It's certainly an interesting question and something to think about both when viewing and creating images.

Pink works very well with cocoa shades of brown. Brown is a neutral, so really, any color can potentially work beautifully with brown depending on the shade of brown.

I found that my chocolate entry attempts were enhanced when I introduced different tones of brown to the primary brown color, like the lighter brown of cocoa powder against the chocolate. Also, black and white seemed to help highlight the richness of the brown subject.

The Designer's Guide To Color is a series of very handy, beautifully laid out books on color combining.

The thing to remember with complimentary colors is that they generally work best together when one compliment is used as an accent, i.e., with restraint. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule.
