I would guess that defishing an image taken with a fisheye lens would be illegal under the basic rules, but I actually can't find anything in those rules that seems to explicitley disallow it.

Does anyone know if this has been hashed out before?

Defish is illegal under the basic rules. A similar discussion took place regarding the distortion corrections available under the "lens" tab in Adobe® PhotoShop® and the consensus was "illegal". That's a much milder correction than a defish.

OK, thanks. What do the basic rules say about cheating, then? ;)

Well I never heard of defishing before, so if I can find it, it sounds like a term that should be suggested to the folks doing the DPC dictionary!

Hee hee, don't listen to Julia, she might be slightly biased =)

Seriously, I agree for the most part. When I use a fisheye, I'm typically wanting the distortion for effect.
That said, the "full frame" 15mm fisheyes do yield beautiful images when defished, and defishing doesn't always mean correcting ALL of the distortion. I sometimes partially correct to get an effect I want.

Exactly. I love the distortion a fish gives, but in some cases I'm using it just to get that 18mm defished wide. This was one of those cases. Bummer.

Fisheye lenses are made to get that sertain looke, note just to edit it away again. Grigrigirl photo in third place is a proof of what you can do with it and I wouldn't want to defish this shot of mine for anything, except for a ribbon :)
