Not whatever they want but, specifically, what one loves.
I propose that an inspired photo is one born of need not mere convenience.

The first priority is meeting the challenge. If only one shot meets the challenge and you care about the score, then your decision is made. If both photos pass that test, then concept and emotion will outscore a technically perfect, but uninspiring shot. |

For the June Free Study, I submited a photo I thought might do better instead of the one I truly wanted to enter. I placed very low, anyway, got very few comments, and felt that I had cheated the image I loved so much (and myself) by not giving it a chance. I say, submit what you love.
This is the photo I decided not to submit to that challenge. In my head, I kept envisioning the comments, "too grainy", "it's a phone booth---you had a month to shoot and this is what you submit?" and others along those lines. I'm so happy I took this photo. I actually went back again to get a higher resolution shot (in TIFF) but it still came out fairly noisy. I noticed yesterday, that they are painting over the lovely pastel colors. Now it is plain white.

This is of course assuming both images meet the challenge. I think the overall quality of the challenges will only increase if the photographers only submit shots they love. Anyones work will improve with practice and attention, but the challenges will improve if that attention is given to the heart and soul of the photographer, instead of just a collection of colorful dots of light.
But what do I know? I am sitting out yet another challenge due to lack of time to get the shot even half-way close to how I want it.

i think i'm just looking at it from a different perspective, which is the fact that LOVE technically perfect shots. A mundane-ish subject that pops because of the extremely sharp focus and/or tonal range is one of the things that I strive to do.
technically perfect is my goal, AND they score well ... so submitting a photo that i love and submitting a photo i think will win is the same thing. |

Why? Did I say something you took as a thread killer?
I hope not! I do that enough as it is. :(
