I am just starting to use PS Elements to do my re-sizing for challenges and also my first uses of USM. I have seen here that it is best to use the USM after sizing down; but that also increases the file size up. Is there a "formula" for knowing how much to re-size it to so that it will end up at the <150k after sharpening? Thanks!

Just sharpen it how you want it at 640px, then choose the amount of compression you need to get to <150kb. You shouldnt need to worry too much, as 99% of the time the compression isnt even noticable.

Thank you. I am not at my PC right now, so can't see the PSE screens, but is the compression option within the sharpening/USM dialog box?

No the compression is when you save the photo as a jpeg. It might be called "quality" rather than compression.

Thanks, Konador! I am sure that will help when I get back to my PC!

You know what works best for me? When I resize to my DPC entry size, I just apply one "Sharpen". Works great 90% of the time. I use USM when I do larger images and pritns.
