..... I'm trying to make a logo at the moment and a large part of the company name is 'Bright'. Does anyone have any ideas on how to represent brightness (whatever meaning of the word you like; brilliance, intelligence, bright light etc.) on a small, business card/letterhead size logo that would have to be printable in black and white and relatively simple in detail?
I'm a bit stumped and could do with a few new views!! |

Something with a lightbulb. Perhaps the name of the company could be within the bulb in a kind of arc across the top of the bulb.
Of course, it would help to know a little about what the company's primary business activity is... Lightbulbs or 'elecrtical-like' things are usually the domain of electricians. |

Yeah true. The full name is BrightRaven. IT company who's name comes from a germanic translation. Lots of ideas for the raven part but a little lost with the bright. Had ideas like using the sun or a star and things like that but feels a bit too cheesy. |

I came up with an idea... the best representation I can give you is this photograph which I found online.
The photograph is not mine so I can't say go ahead and use it, but it might give you some inspiration. I had been thinking along the lines of a slightly more abstract bird (the v's used to typically draw them) at the brightest point of a circular gradient, as if it were emitting light.
If I didn't have to go to work in 5 minutes I'd sketch it up.

I was thinking about the sun too.Maybe something about sun glasses. The sign could be a pair of shades and the logo (with brightraven you will never be left out in the sun.)..I alwayse wanted to do this type work...ever since I was a kid watching I dream Of Jennie..lol
Good Luck |

If you are a good artist how about a b/w sketch of a raven with the old round spectacles on in a mortar board hat? like the old wise owl cartoons.

Thanks Terry, this is kind of the thing i'm thinking of, with basic triangular shapes for the bird. The circular gradient is the part i'm stuck on how it would work though. When it gets faxed i think the effect could be lost and it may just look crap! I'm gonna try lots out and see what i come up with.
Matrix, its good fun doing this kind of stuff. I made a living for a couple of months in thailand doing it which was really good. I had only used photoshop for about 2 months before i started and learnt so much very quickly. Also did brochures, flyers etc. |

What about a stylized Network Plug coming out from some bright 'star-shaped' light curving a little...
I will sketch out something, scan it and post it... (If you decide to use it, I would never expect royalties, just some recognition...)

The classic logo image would be to simply draw the company name. Bright raven is a great name for this. I picture a black square in which is a perched raven which is emitting white light in that same radial way the eye of fatima radiates light on the back of the one dollar bill. Keep the technique simple and blocky like a wood cut or engraving and you might even hint at the germanic origin of the name strictly by technique.
In book design and other graphic high end work you never want to use the same work and image, but in corperate logos you really cant afford much subtelty. Hammer it home. and keep it reeeeal simple. |
