Since this is my first challenge... is appropriate to send a private message to someone who comments made while voting is going on. To me it seems like that would make things not so anonymous. Or, is that the whole idea! I'm supposed to try to change the minds of those with negative comments.

No, usually people don't do that unless the comment includes a question. But if you want to PM the person, go for it. Most of us love to get messages =) |

even if they have a question, i usually wait until after voting is over to answer.

I think the best thing about this site is that images are completely anonymous during vote. It works great against the "vote me and I vote you" gangs seen on all majority of photography sites. That's why I always respect it and also even if the comment is a question I wait till the challenge is over to reply. No question can be so serious that it can't wait a few days for an answer. Also I belive imagess should speak for themselves, and PM-ing people around trying to explain stuff to a commenter uselsess. The image should speak not the words. In a gallery the photographer doesn't assist the viewer and try to explain every picture. He just hangs them there and the viewer is alone. So when I get PM's that explain me stuff that I whas supose to see when I commented but I didn't I just ignore and delete them.
