questions-
- The reflection on water that 'sparkles' is this just burnt or is it acceptable in water shots as these?
- any ideas how to prevent such effects?
- which version do you like better?
( fyi : shot of gray whale taken on west coast vancouver island with 400mm, 1/1000, 7.1, 125 iso, spot metered )
thx!!

good shots, I like the composition of the first one, but like the coloring of the second one.

The sparkling waer does not bother me, but I think a circular polarizer would help reduce the effect.

Must have been an incredibly bright day!!!!!!!

Like whales so like the shot. When you see it in person, you get a tremendous sense of size and mass. If you could capture this sense, it would go from "like the shot" to "WOW."

Very nice shot. I love the second one (gone to my favourits). I love water and everything to do with it, so if you have more of the same, just brig it on. :)

Grumpy captain means less time to shoot. Midday means high harsh light. The best pictures I've seen of the subject have been taken very late in the day with the sun just off the horizon, and one shot by moonlight.

But you can't always control these factors without a National Geographic scale budget.

Speaking of "National Geographic scale budgets", has anybody else seen Canon's 60-second "mini documentaries" called "The Shot"? You can view them here; this post made me think about the one about Steve Bloom... 16 days! OMG... (but all 5 are worth watching)

I like the 2nd image and I don't think the sparkling water hurts the photo at all. Can't wait to see more from this photo shoot :-D
