Wondering if anyone can help me to understand what type of electrical adapter I might need in Jamaica. I will need to recharge batteries and use a laptop. Jamaica is wired for 110v/ 50 cycles...and I have no idea how this compares to the U.S. Any advice? |

The physical plug is the same as the US. Whether or not your equipment can handle the cycle change or not is another issue.
For example, the Canon battery charger that comes with the 10D can operate at 50 or 60hz. Info for your brand should be in the manual.
Your computer equipment often will have more stringent requirements. Again, this should be in the manual and if it isn't a call to support will yield quick results.
For everything else, shavers, alarm clocks, etc it's usually easier to just use a battery operated or mechanical version even though many of these will handle the cycle change just fine. AA and AAA batteries are common and you can buy disposable razors everywhere.

if your plugs are polarized, then one prong is wider than the other |

You are most likely staying at a hotel. Short term you will not have an issue.. especially at a hotel.
It is when you are "in the country" that you have cycle issues. My In-Laws go thru appliances faster than we would, but it still takes years.
What part of Jamaica are you going to? I used to live in, and my husband is from, Montego Bay.

No no no. You'll be fine. I have brought my digicams there before to film family weddings, and take shots etc. I'm excited for our next trip (although not yet actually planned), because now I have a portable storage device to use there. woo hoo!
Even though it is a poor country, they actually have things we don't have here, or had some conveniences there before we had them here in the USA.
Have fun, and be sure to share your photos when you get back! We miss it dearly!

If you look on the chargers for your camera & laptop, you should be able to determine if they are compatible. Look on the "wall wart" part (the part that actually plugs into the wall). You should see something like this:
Input: 110-240 VAC, 47-63 Hz
Output: 10.5 VDC, 0.6A MAX
From the above, the unit will handle any combination of voltage and frequency between 110 and 240 volts and from 47 to 63 cycles/second (Hz); this would cover virtually all existing power configurations I may run into.
I took the above numbers from the charger for my Nikon 995.
Most laptops today are capable of handling all common power configurations as well, since it's cheaper in the long run to have only one charger.
Some older chargers do support 110V and 240V but need to be manually switched. Watch out for these, putting the switch in the wrong position can seriously damage the device you're supplying power to.

i just bought a rewritable drive for my laptop...thinking i could use that for memory storage. Now, I am wondering if I should just invest in a portable storage drive. Does anything ever get lost with portable storage? I would hate to take a chance. |

You could buy a portable USB stick, I always use them for my college stuff, they're really good... |
