Wow,
Everyone has been right. What a great camera. I had almost forgotten what a SLR feels like. For it to be digital is great. I took only family pics this weekend, but am looking forward to the challenges. Thanks to all for the feedback.

Congrats on your new camera, I stood in the shop for hours looking at the Canon Rebel ('kiss' its called here in japan) and the Nikon D70, the only reason I went with the Nikon is because it felt more like my old Camera and the Canon Kiss (rebel) .... actually, if it had REBEL on it instead of KISS I might of bought it...hahahaha, Japan has some great names for stuff really it makes me laugh at times, why make a great camera like the DSLR Rebel and then call it something daft like KISS??? anyway it's a GREAT camera and I'm sure you will have tons of fun with it, the DSLR range of cameras are wonderfull and it DOES feel so good to have a SLR back in my hands after a few Prosumer digicams.
just for a laugh I will mention the funniest 'ENGRISH' I have seen in Japan to date was a beer making kit called "LET'S BEER GREAT"
have a look here for some other classics like chocolate colons...yummy
funny japanese engrish
Finally... Im not mocking the Japanese My wife is Japanese and I have 2 children and I live here and find the people wonderfull (some laws are a bit wierd) but the natural mistakes in english are rather funny.

Welcome aboard; now you get "lens fever" which, as far as I can tell, is incurable. But fun. Good luck!

Yeah, choose your lenses carefully. Best value, not cheapest!

You are right about lens fever. I am looking at the Sigma 28-135 macro. It is not the fastest lens in the west but from what I can tell the Sigma lens is good glass. What do you think? |

Welcome to Team Canon! I'm sure you'll love the camera. I agree that it was weird going back to SLR after using point-n-shoots but I can't imagine using anything else. I thought I was going to miss the real time preview on-screen but I don't. Enjoy your new toy and take lots of pics!
BTW, there is no cure for mustpurchaseanewlensitis. :)

here is a comparison of lenses in that range, from the looks
that lens didn't fair so well. I think I would stick to the
canon 28-135 IS |

Congrats on your new 300D. I'll be picking mine up tomorrow, so we'll be in the same club. I can't wait!
And that Engrish site is one of my all-time favorites. I'll be back in Japan in August and have a few items that I want to take pictures of with my new camera to send in to Engrish. Look for them soon! :-)

On the way home from work today I looked at the Sigma 28-300 3.5-5.6 I think. I was just looking for something to overlap the stock 18-55. This lens is about $450. I worked well on the Rebel. 300mm plus the 1.6 cmos factor is awesome.

Wow, after review, there is no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to lens. Even price does not insure a good review. I need something that is good and reasonable having spent all my hold money on the camera. It seems that the Sigma 28-300 did not do well and even some of the Canon zooms that span the 18 to 55 mm range don't get good reviews. Just where is this holy grail.

Photo.net recommends the Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.5 IS lens and a friend of mine just bought it. I haven't seen any of his photos yet but hopefully soon. Here's a link with lens comments and recommendations: //www.photo.net/equipment/canon/300D/EOS_300D_lenses.html

The Canon 28 135 IS sure seems like the lens. It is really looks like a good comprimise. Thanks for the comment. I think I will same my mad money and make do with the kit lens until I can afford that lens. Thanks again for all of the comments. This group really does help a lot.
