For CF cards, I use two ScanDisk 256ers and a 512 ScanDisk Ultra II. I also have three 128 MemoryStick and one 256 MemoryStickPro.
As much as I like my cameras, I'm frustrated to the point of furor with CF cards. Neither camera nor card manufacturer appear to have a clue as to how to address the 'unreadable file' issue. Their demonstrated interest in the problem is faint, to say the least.
What is the point of investing thousands in hardware when you can't use it for the purpose it was designed for? I have no use for new 'features' and versions of cams or cards, if I can't retrieve my pictures simply and quickly.
Curiously, I have recorded infinitely more pictures on MemorySticks than on CF cards and never had a problem with the Sony's.

I have a 1GB Sandisk, and four 256MB (various brands) cards. I've shot well over 10,000 pictures on 4 different cameras (Coolpix995, Coolpix 5700, Canon dRebel, Nikon d70). I have yet to lose a single image due to unreadable file error.
I shot a wedding this past weekend, and once I'd filled up the 1GB, I'd use a 256MB while i was dumping the first batch onto my laptop. It worked pretty seamlessly. I got around 350-400 pics each time on the 1GB card. shot just under 1400 for the day. |

Beware of people claiming the "PQI" brand are the fastest around.
Check with them that you can return for a refund.
The ones I got all caused an err-02 on my camera. |

I've been shooting the same cards for the past year (some newer, obviously) and only once ever had a write failure in my 10D. I have since sold my 128MB and shoot only RAW, so with my 3.75GB of storage (1-2GB, 1-1GB, 1-512, 1-256 all Sandisk UltraII) I get about 600 shots. And I would love to have another 1GB and 2GB.
I don't have a laptop, no media storage device... just an iPod and the mediacard reader for those really long trips.

I agree with a few smaller cards. It kind of depends on how many pictures you shoot in a sitting, what level you go with (256 or 512). I use 256s. On my camera it gets me 72 pics per card which is more than enough frames between changing cards. It takes all of 2 seconds to change and with more cards I can change right before I shoot a series like a fast action sports play. I would be cautious shooting everything on one card because EVERYTHING electronic fails at some point. I highly recommend the Sandisk Extreme cards. They're about 10% faster than the rest of the pack and have a higher temperature and shock tolerance. Personally, I have never had a Smart Media or CF card fail and I hope to keep it that way. Treat your cards with care, never touch the contacts and keep them in a dust cover.

I have an iPod, and use a device made by Belkin to transfer images off my single 256 MB compact flash card when it gets full.
The iPod travels with me on long shoots, and effectively gives me 10 GB of space. |

I use a 4GB hatachi MD and a 512 CF plus two 128 cf. Given an unlimited budget I would have lots of 512, but the MD was eight times the storage for twice the price . Some day it will crash and I will feel very sad, but untill then it is a heck of a lot of storage for $200. I never use the 128s since I have become a RAW convert. I count on filling a 512 a day of casual shooting if I remember to review and delete as I go. |
