I think thats a case of marketing from the canon team, i have a Pixus 850i and have used all kinds of paper with it without problems.

That's the crux of it. A lot of photographers ARE selling prints produced from desktop units. While longevity tests can't be taken as gosphel, I would feel more comfortable selling a print with a higher longevity rating than what Canon offers.
