Will the canon 1.4x extender work with say a canon 100mm macro lens? Canon says the extender can only be used with primes at 135mm and over ... why? Does it physically not fit?

It also only works with certain L lenses so I don't believe it will work with the macro lens. (I don't know why the restriction)

Lenses which except teleconverters the mounts are shaped different way so they can fit inside.

Before you buy teleconverter check the list of lenses they can fit in !

You are correct, the 100mm prime will simply not physically accomodate the teleconverter. The extender actually protrudes into the host lens when attached... like a male/female connection. I'm not sure if this is true for all teleconverters, but for the 1.4x/2x Canon, this is true.

So a 3rd party teleconverter would fit? Why would canon do that?

From what I understand, it is to maximize image quality when using L-series lenses with a teleconverter. The lenses and teleconverters were designed with each other in mind. The Canon TC's front optic protrudes into the cavity at the back of those lenses which can accomodate it.

They do it to get the quality glass in there. I believe if you use and extentsion tube it will fit. The other brand extenders should all carry a Mickey Mouse brand label.(besides Nikor of course)

Tim

I haven't actually seen that sigma extender it looks better than the cheap ones as well.

Thanks Kosta ... so much for getting a macro lens AND a telephoto lens at the same time (someone have and extra $1200 for the 180mm L?)
