I'm working on my RAW files in photoshop cs and if I go to images/modes its marked to be 8 bits channel. Am I looseing information by working in 8 bits channel and not 16 bits?

The fuji S602 stores it in a .TIF file.

ps.
I used to take jpeg but then I heard Heiða takes all her pictures in RAW. I also got my self an other memory card 512mb.

I dont find that you lose that much quality. I have the s7000 and I used raw a couple of times but found that it was too much hassle for the output. If you have the time it can be worth it for money shots, but daily shooting I have not found it to be worth it.

Yes, but when you shoot raw it should be 16bits not 8bits.

Anyone notice this in photoshop?

When you initially open a RAW file in Photoshop CS there's a selection box just below the preview window where you can indicate either 8 bits or 16. I believe this is also a preference you can set so it selects 16 by default.

That answers my question, I think.

I always keep it at 8
Is there much difference?
Does it get bigger if I choose 16?

I Have PS Elements but I don't think that will give me any options with RAW is that correct.

What other options do I have as far as software is concerned?

Thanks

My understanding is that Elements will not be able to read a RAW file at all. You have to convert it with something else.

A 16 bit file will be larger than an 8 bit file. Cameras allowing the RAW format usually capture 12 bits/channel of information so using 8 bit you actually lose some information. Depending on the amount of post processing you do you may be ok with 8. If you plan on doing alot of post processing, using 16 will give you more leeway in how much you can do.

I was thinking about it after I read this in some thread here. (don't remember what thread).

It says that one of the best thing about RAW it gives you more control over the image becuase it 16 bits (14bits from camera) and not 8 bits like jpeg

Read this about the RAW and JPEG

Raw file import for Olympus E10/20 functions quite well in Photoshop Elements 2. Am not sure if it is 16 or 8 bit, probably 8. For anyone interested the Olympus plug-in converter can be found here:

I wasn't aware that the 602z shot RAW files, just Tiff or Jpeg ?
My tiffs and jpegs all come out at 24 bit, well that is what the properties in ACDsee says, any comments guys?

That's 8 bits/channel (for each of RGB), so total of 24. This is also known as the bit depth. 16 bits/channel would be 48 bit depth.

i don't believe it does RAW, TIFF is the closest you can get to raw on that camera.

I put an = sign to the TIFF and RAW for the S602z, not sure if that totaly correct. At least the closest thing.

6mp RAW is about 17megs from Cannon EOS 10D I think and so is the TIFF file on the s602z.

You will have less tools available in 16 bit with PS CS, about half of your filters will be unavailable. Not much of a problem, your basic blur and sharpen will still be there, but your artistic, etc will be gone. Some 3rd party filters will work in 16 bit mode.
