I have impatiently waited months for the end of "June gloom". Finally the skys turn blue, warm summer days return and I think I'll finally get some time to take some good pictures.

There's a wildlife preserve about 3 miles from where I live. One of several in the area. After eating a hearty breakfast, I leave the house to examine what might be new and exciting at the preserve.

At the entrance I read the following sign;

Sounds like it's going to be a long summer.

Time to wear one of those Taliban "borkahs" (spelling?).

In all seriousness, that sucks dude. West Nile isn't here yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

if you make it far enough to read the sign, wouldn't it be too late? my family has a summer house on a lake in NC, and i have been bitten so many times it seems like i should have west nile by now. then again, there haven't been any warnings in our area as far as i know.

That's gotta suck! Was this the Back Bay reserve you mentioned in the other thread??

Not many people get it, and 80% of those that get it will never know they had it. It's not that big of a deal, the media makes it sound more scary then it really is. Wear some good bug spray and you'll probably be fine.

I hope everyone goes and reads the link louddog left. Last year here in CO, everyone and there dog thought they had WNV, and were going to die. They don't bother looking up the info, just listen to the news and hear one or two of the symptoms, then rush to the ER, just because of that.
Thankfully they set up a testing station (because some people just like to let everyone else know they had WNV, even though they just have mild symptoms), this year to break the load of those, but we are not getting hit so bad this year.

Chuck, this is not the same preserve; the back bay is about 30 miles from here.

I was extremely disappointed to see the sign as I am outdoors a great deal. The biggest impact it had on me today was that after I spotted a dead crow in a tree, it became necessary to report it to the park rangers. Birds are one of West Niles biggest victims, and I hope the local bird population is not going to be in significant danger.

Although I won't live in fear, I will take precautions. Long sleves and pants in 90+ degree heat won't make it; but I will use insect replellants. ( which will I think will eliminate any chance of macro photography). I think I do pretty well at resisting infections and diseases, but mosquitos find me most attractive. In a group of ten people, I am the one they will choose.

There's not much else one can do. By the end of summer I expect to have been bitten by mosquitos more than a dozen times. They will find me no matter where I go =)
