WOW! I just finally figured out how to use Neat Image. And I'm amazed at how well it reduces or completly gets rid of noise. I redid this picture
It was really sharp and really noisy before..And now it is soooooo smooth. I'm amazed. I put more pictures in my portfolio that I used Neat Image with.

I have no clue where to find Neat Image or what it does. Is it similar to a "salt and pepper" filter? s+p filter works wonders for removing noise and nothing but.

I downloaded it a few weeks ago because of a thread here in the forum, and deleted it after a week trying and testing. The noisefilters in PS are much better, and I couldn't get a nice natural-looking picture with NeatImage.
I am curious for the original crazycrystal, if you say it was too sharp you could have probably just blurred it to make ik better. I don't like the look now, very unnatural, like it's a rendering from a 3d-program. |

I guess I just like the quick fix kind of thing. I understand not everybody likes the same programs. But I am really liking the Neat Image thing. It gets rid of noise better than I have done on the very old Photoshop that I have. (my photoshop is from 1999). I really like the way it softens the pictures. I have probably put over 100 pictures through Neat Image (and I've been up all night..6am here)...cuz I really like the way it softens babies faces up and things as such.

Hi folks. Neat Image is much more than a salt & pepper filter and no way is a PS filter going to outperform it. However, some setup is required and "profiles" are recommended for best performance with your specific camera. I don't know whether they use a statistical algorithm or other means, but it is truly outstanding if used properly.
My E-1 doesn't need noise reduction in most cases, but I also use a Sony 828 that needs it on anything above ISO 200. I have profiles for the 828 that cover all ISO and color settings so it's all automated.
Not trying to sound argumentative, but if you aren't getting good results you aren't using it correctly. Go to the website and read through the setup material and try the demo version. |

There are a couple of other noise reduction programs on the market, such as Noise Ninja and Noiseware. Noiseware is completely free and can be downloaded Here. |

I haven't used Neat Image (won't run on Mac) but I have to say that it's use should be restricted to appropriate applications. Sometimes, a graphic looks very cool and "right" when it's so smooth that it looks unreal. Other times, it just looks unnatural. My take on the subject is that Neat Image is great but not if it's overused, ya know? Kinda like when folks find a cool filter in photoshop and then they use it on everything! |

Also, be aware that the "free" version of NeatImage saves highly compressed JPEGs, which often result in visible compression artifacts. The free version is meant to be a "demo". =] |

I just started using it too, and I'm very pleased with it.
