Is the softness a bad thing?
They are soft, I believe, because I should have used a slightly faster shutterspeed. The butterflies would sit still for only a few seconds here and there, which often provided me only enough time to focus and take one shot. All of these were shot handheld with a Quantara 70-300mm Tele-Macro (1:2) Lense fully extended, it was difficult to keep the camera steady.
They do not allow tripods and there was virtually no place to prop myself in the whirlwind of butterflies. I used Shutter Priority set at 1/200th of a second, along with the built-in flash to capture the images. Through the glass roof, a great deal of sunlight filtered in, so the White-Balance was set to daylight, I probably should have used the shade setting, even though there was very little of that.
I plan on going back soon and when I do, I will see about renting a Speedlight 550ex or pick-up the Sigma Super 500-something flash. Then, I will play with a tighter shutterspeed, WB set to Shade and see what I can get...
It would be awesome to pick-up a better macro lense, right now, that's not an option. |
