Hello.
My birthday is coming up in a few days and I wanna give myself a present since I live all by myself in this country :( and no one else is gonna give me one. Ok, enough with the sappy story. I'm seriously considering buying this lens. I like it cause it's fairly fast (faster thatn anything I own) and the front of the lens doesn't move. What do you think? Does anyone have this lens? Care to share your experiences? Thank you.

June

I don't have this lens so I can't comment in that regard, however, with 72mm filter threads, filters can be rather pricey.

You may want to steer clear of this lens, it has not gotten good reviews. There are at least two good alternatives:

1.) The Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM II is well-respected and is only slightly slower. It's about $229 & takes 58mm filters.

2.) The Sigma 24-135 f/2.8-4.5 Aspherical IF lens is about $319, and is also rated well. (77mm filters)

Regarding filter size, Canon lenses seem to take 58mm, 72mm, or 77mm filters. Mostly the higher-end lenses all take 77mm. I just bought 58 & 77mm filters and use a step-up ring for the one lens I have that uses 72mm filters.

Disclaimer: I have used none of these lenses, just regurgitating what I've seen on the DPReview forums.

This lens lists as sub-average here.

I do however have this lens and am fairly happy with it's performance with the Digital Rebel. It lists as average here. It is not however f/2.8-4.

Just got this and it is now like I have a whole new camera. Unbelieveable lens!!! It lists as very good here. Only 1/100th of a point less than the Canon EF 2.8 28-70mm USM L.

I bought this Sigma 28-105 mm f:/2.8-4 ( New), but after 5 days taking pictures, I am very dissapointed, so I must sold this with a very cheap. (In my country , no camera shop would return or changed another lens like in USA). I trade it with Canon 28-105 mm f:/3.5-4.5 which I want buy it before. This Canon much better sharpness. The sigma lens above is very soft result no matter the aperture. It is very soft, My suggestion buy another one......
