I am so sick and tired of the people who can not think even the least little bit outside the box of a challenge and then when you reply to a comment they left and try to explain yourself they go back and redo the comment getting even nastier and making rude remarks that are just uncalled for on a photo.
I'm sorry I just had to get this out of my system! I tried to keep my displeasure to pms but this person now left a lasting comment on one of my enteries and it has me more than a little annoyed!
I feel if you are able to leave a rude or uncalled for comment during a challenge you should be big enough to just accept the fact that you can offend the photographer and be able to handle a reply in pms not go back and make even worse comments on the photo.

You shouldn't be surprised. For anyone childish enough to leave a rude comment on a photo, I would expect no less than a childish response to a PM. |

LOL I was trying to avoid saying it was childish to go back and redo the comment even making it worse...but thank you for saying that for me!

Perhaps you should not bother to pm people trying to "explain" your image...... I agree it's childish, but I personally don't agree with pming people during challenges either.... so to some degree you brought it on yourself. |

The problem was the person was misunderstanding the photo and anytime a comment is left with questions or misinterputations I respond to it. I don't think it is fare that the person went back totally erased the first comment now left a nasty one and I can't leave any comments on my own photo til the challenge is over, so why shouldn't a pm be possible? But for the person to be unable to keep the comments to pms and go back and leave a nasty comment is very upsetting.

I understand your angst! What I don't understand is why some folks get so terribly upset when your opinion of a photo doesn't mesh with theirs. It's like they feel their vision or their creativity is being challenged. Then there are those who think their techniques are beyond reproach.
Not to be ugly but I wish those personality types would simply skip the challenges as their attitude precludes any benefit they might gain from comments left by others.
I've been lucky in that I haven't gotten any nasty PMs regarding any of my comments. However, if someone harbors the idea that they can use me as their emotional punching bag because my comment wasn't taken with an open mind, they should realize something... Anything they aren't willing to post in public shouldn't be written in a PM as I have no qualms whatsoever about making a public broadcast of their message. In other words, don't assume that because it's a private message that someone will not share it with everyone else thereby making you take responsibility for your words. |

Hey, thats life. I agree with Toddh, you take that risk when you PM someone, especially when the challenge is still on. That person most likely lowered their vote as well.
In general isn't it an unwritten rule not to give any clues to which image is whos?

I think it's childish to mark a comment with nothing more then a smiley face as helpful, and then not mark any comment that has anything critical to say about the picture as helpful.
The check box is for marking a comment helpful, not just comments you appreciate.
I couldn't find the comment you were talking about, but if you send a PM to someone telling them their comment (AKA their opinion) is incorrect, you should expect an equal and opposite reaction. |

the smiley face you are referring to was from a friend who had sent an email to me about the photo. As for not finding that is cause it is in a current challenge.

I started a thread a few days ago on a system I thought might go someway towards reducing this problem and also some other complaints associated with commenting.
The thread was named "Commenting setup" (sorry haven`t learned how to make them clickable yet)and despite the number of people who claim to get upset with various aspects of the commenting system..it did not get a great many replies which I found surprising.

Lately I've been following my original pattern of not reading the comments until I have at least 10. That way, any one off the wall comment will be lost in the shuffle of generally benign or positive ones, and it will make it feel more like "they" have the problem, not me.
I don't reply to people who "don't get it" during the challenge; on the rare occasions I do reply it's in answer to a direct question. |

Gordon, I bumped your Commenting Setup thread with another message. I think it's a noble idea, but difficult to implement as explained in my note.
I agree with GeneralE. There's little point to sending a PM unless it's specifically requested. Otherwise, you are just as likely to make the issue worse. |

Shannon, thank you for the use of your expertise :)
I did say in the thread that I suspected implementation could be a problem but hoped that this could be discussed in more depth than it ultimately was.
Thanks again. |
