There is a tool in Photoshop, and I assume the other editing softwares, that is called the "burn tool". It lets you darken areas of your photo by dragging and clicking the tool over it. It is also done in film photography.

...usually done in the sky to make it more dramatic. The tool looks like a lollipop in Adobe programs.

Ansel Adams used this to great effect in the darkroom way before personal computers came out.

It is a hand, the lollipop is the dodge tool.

I learned how to use this tool after realizing that was part of what makes Heida's photos so dramatic. Some good advice a DPC member gave me awhile back was to adjust the contrast before dodging and burning. I dodge highlights and burn midtones. I tend not to burn shadows too much.

I used the technique in this photo, one of my better scoring shots:

Here's a few other shots where I've used dodging and burning...

Here's an example where I think I overdid it.

I knew about dodging and burning from working in the darkroom years ago but I never realized the tool existed in PS until recently. I never got a book or took a class in PS. I've always just felt my way around and I've pretty much learned stuff intuitively until quite recently. Silly of me, I know.
