I was a little surprised (sad) at the score I ultimately got for my Extraordinay entry. Although they may not be extraordinary shots, and not everyone likes architecture shots, the Unisphere is pretty out of the ordinary even if people have been shooting it for 40 years. :^) Here it is along with two alternates from the batch that I shot that day. I was torn between the three when I submitted and I'd love some honest critique on them.
Entry - Alt 1 - Alt 2
Thanks for any comments,

I like the 3rd one best if the police line was cropped out. Like someone else stated on the first, the persons head really gets in the way. |

Of the three as they are, I like the one you submitted best. Personally, I like the head in the foreground looking up at the globe.
But I think I'd also like the last shot if the ground was cropped out. The police barriers are distracting. Just the globe against the sky could make an interesting shot -- the contrast of the hard metal and the wonderful white puffy clouds is great, and with the ground cropped it might feel like the globe was suspended in the sky, giving it a more "extraordinary" feel. Also, perhaps use an off center composition, even cropping part of the globe. Sometime centered subjects feel a little boring or "snap-shot."

I was one of those that said so and I still believe that to be true. I agree that the third one would be the best choice, without the police line. The sky is simply perfect, the clouds are awesome and provide, to me, a great contrast for the Unisphere.

Thanks. As far as the centered crops... I wanted the shot to show as much of it as possible, give a sense for the scale, and I had to get pretty far away from it with my 18-55 just to get it all in the frame. But, I know what you mean...

I definately like the one you entered the best. The head helps the shot quite a bit.
While not dpc usable, You could try cropping the ground and cloning out the three supports in the third picture, might be really cool just floating there. |
