Hi, just got my digital about 2 weeks ago. Really like this site so far. Just submitted to my first challenge. Below are a couple of pics I took. Looking for feedback, suggestions etc. The blue rose had some work in photoshop. Desat background, and adjust hue/sat on the rose(it was red), the other is straight from the camera no edits.

The yellow one is nice, maybe crop it a bit tighter. Not real found of the desaturation on the rose one though.

Welcome to DPC.

Pretty good shots for a beginner. I think I'd like the sel desat one better in full color and maybe cropped a bit tighter.

Here's the original of the rose.I thought the rose lacked detail, which is why I went with editing it.

I think the lack of detail is due to the slight overexposure. One way to tell if the exposure is ok is to look at the histogram. If the graph runs into either end of the scale (left for shadows and right for highlights) then the exposure isn't balanced. If you get the chance to try the shot again try about 1/2 to 1 stop less exposure.

I actually have been looking at that recently. I've noticed it helps. Only thing is, on my camera, I only get the histogram when shooting in automatic mode. I've been shooting in manual a lot to try to learn the apeture and shutter better, and it wont't show the histogram. It does have another number that ranges from -3 to + 3 depending on how bright it is. Not sure of the term. I've noticed if I keep that around 0 that the exposure usually is pretty good.
