It finally happened. Tonight, I was getting my camera prepared to go out and take some pictures of the fog. I have had to tape the battery compartment shut for almost the life of my camera. While I was smoothing down the packing tape I use, my thumb slipped a tad and with the gentlest pressure (so it seemed) the shutter release popped up. It is still attatched but it is hanging by a thread (not a pretty sight). I can actually use it a bit but the connections get shorted.
I have zero funds to buy a new camera. My husband has an old Kodak DC10 and I considered using that but after taking a sample shot in Best mode I realized it was hopeless.

I can't believe this happened the very day after finally taking the plunge and paying for a year's membership (I had been cheaping out and paying a month at a time). Well, I'll still be voting on the challenges. Maybe my mom will let me borrow her Fuji Finepix 3000. I feel weird about asking her since she hasn't even used it yet. It was a birthday present my dad bought her in April. They are still trying to figure it out. ;-D

Edited for typos....

I am so sorry for you. I hope you saw the comments I lift on a couple of your recent shots. Hopefully you can find another camera soon; maybe a great deal on eBay? Good luck to you.

I did see the comments Kylie and I was really tickled you liked my shot, '50 Cents', since I'm quite partial to that one. I discovered the comments this afternoon along with some comments left by someone else for some other stuff in my portfolio.

I left a lot of comments the pasts couple of weeks and I think when you do this, people tend to check out your own work. Every now and again someone will leave a comment on a portfolio image. I know I've done this myself recently.

Anway, I'll console myself by imagining how well I would have done in the next few challenges. ;-D
eBay does have some good deals on a couple of models I'm considering (the Minolta Dimage A1 and the Nikon Coolpix 5700).

Fuji S602 is about 360 over at ebay as well. :)

Tell me something about this model. I like that price--it is actually doable.

It's 6MP interpolated (realistically 4 or so MP) with a long optical zoom (6x optical, 3x "digital"), it uses both CF and SM memory and regular old aa batteries. It produces AWESOME photos and is fully manual (focus, shutter, aperture, everything). It has a timer, flash, better than average low light focusing...

It produced these.

Thanks for the heads up, Mavrik. I have also been considering the Fuji Finepix s7000. An older model hadn't occurred to me but in my current position I should definitely keep that in mind. I'm heading over to eBay to look now. My birthday is coming up, August 17, and I was probably going to be getting a new camera anyway. ;-D I'm sad about my Nikon because I was going to give it to my kids. They use it anyway but it would have been theirs to use when they wanted.

I'm not to familiar with the 700, but I do have a Coolpix 995. I had the shutter release pop off on mine, and was able to fix it. If you or your husband are handy, it may be possible to reattach it.
If it is like the 995, it is held by four plastic tabs that fit thru four slots. They can come unglued, leaving the release dangling from it's flexible circuit board.
In order to reattach mine, I carefully removed the back and front covers from the camera body, re-glued the tabs into the slots, then reassembled the body halves.
It's kinda like major surgery (not really, but seems like it, LOL) but you have nothing to lose at this point.

I'm going to paste this onto a Sticky note and have my husband try this. He is very handy with little operations like this. Thanks!

It's a while since I was up on this, but I believe that there are a few features of the Fuji 602 which aren't incorporated as well into the S7000. You may actually be better off with the 602. Perhaps someone else can remind me why this is?!
