A friend just bought a FujiFilm FinePix S5000 and we can't figure out why it has a image quality choice for 6 megapixel (as well as 1,2 and 3) when the camera is sold as 3.1 mp. Does anyone know why this would be?

so confused...

I assume it is the same as mine, the 6mp is using the fuji interpolation system which consists of inserting more pixels into the image using a complex series of guesses compared to the pixels next to them.
Hope this makes sense :)
Great cameras.

It's like all other Fuji Super CCD cameras. It's only actually 3.1MP but it's able to essentially "double" the resolution by filling in spaces in between the pixels with what it thinks should go in there. It's long and complicated to explain.

This is the same for my Fuji 602z..I`ve used this setting previously and there have been threads on the subject explaining the technical details of how the camera can simulate the 6 megapixel feature.
I always use mine at the 3mp setting purely because,to my eye, there was no significant improvement to the image at the 6 mp setting, but it certainly drained the batteries quicker.

It's been said that a 6MP image from the Fuji Super CCD is not really "usable" over 4 or 5MP. I have an S602 and I never used the 6MP setting. Took up more space for not much gain in resolution.

I used it for a short period but found my battery life was extremely short. When viewing the images at 100% they were very pixelated.
As you say there may be an advantage to using it at around 4mp but I only became truly happy with the image when reduced to 50%..so it was back to 3mp for me.

I have always used the highest jpeg setting which is 6mp on fine I believe,(2-3mb) The next setting is a tiff which I never use (18mb)
To get decent sized prints I think this is the only way,

i keep mine set at 6mp Fine all the time. this resolution has always worked great for me and i've never noticed any pixelation at all in any of my prints.

I use an S5000 and I keep my setting on 3mp. The 6mp is really a fake, it is supposed to give the illusion of 6mp, not actually achieve it. I myself questioned this when I bought the camera and staged several photos in both settings and there is absolutely no difference. The 6mp only takes up more space on your memory card. I love my S5000 but I only wish I could get more than a 2 second shutter speed. Thinking of selling it and going SLR... :)

Cheers

Paul and Sher...how many images do you average before the batteries run down ?

i use a Digipower DPS-9000 battery pack and i have 2 sets of rechargeable batteries, just in case. i've never run out of power and rarely have i had to use the rechargeable batteries. i can usually get about 350 shots and i've used about half of the battery pack's charge. of course, that depends on how much i chimp. :)

Sounds like the best setup for the job..I really must start looking at this seriously and getting myself better equipped for the job.
I went through two sets of rechargable batteries in an hour the last time I was in 6mp mode and this is the main reason that I seldom use it..plus I haven`t done much printing of any of my work..but I certainly see the advantage the 6 mp mode for producing decent sized prints..I am also reassured to know that the pixellated way the images appear when viewed on screen is not reproduced in the print.
Thanks Sher.

Hard to say Gordon, I always carry 3 sets of fully charged batteries and shoot at least 75 to 100 without running out the first set.
Depends how long I look at the results afterwards or use flash of course.
Just one thing, I always use the viewfinder and not the lcd for taking the shots, so that is bound to affect the battery drain.
I will make a point of noting how many and get back to you,

Thanks Paul, I don`t use the lcd to view either but you seem to be getting better results than I am even with the rechargeable batteries..I wonder if my charger is playing up.
