Former Syr resident here... Ideas for shoots, huh? North of Syr you've got Old Stone Barn which I plan on making a side trip to on an upcoming shoot trip to the Adirondacks. If you're in the mood for architectural night shots, the Niagra Mohawk building is a classic. For landscapes it's hard to beat the stretch between Syr and Skaneateles (pastureland, hills, some great clouds, etc, etc). I used to mix shows (sound engineer) out in Colgate, and the campus in Hamilton is absolutely gorgeous (see my profile pic!), and just down the road a bit (Rt. 14?) is the town of Earlville -- the quaintest place on earth, just perfect for those quick, small-town themed shoots. If you have a day or two to just drive, stopping off to take shots whenever the mood hits, by all means, snake your way between the Finger Lakes; there are quite a few picturesque spots down that way, and not just a few waterfalls to try your hand at. And back up in Syr, you've got to be coming up on Balloonfest in Jamesville which is quite a sight to shoot, both from the ground and in the air!
That the kind of thing you were looking for? :)
