Ok this really sux - I sold my A40 a few months ago and I've been bored ever since.!
I was wondering which Cam to buy out of these 3 -
1.Sony F717
2.Olympus 5060WZ
3.Canon G5.
The different problems that each cam has has made it difficult for me to choose.
For example the G5 has a purple fringing problem.
So I would really apreciate it if someone can give me a good excuse to buy one of these or some good advice.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers all!

I can't really give you any comparisons, but if you want an excuse - they're all pretty good cameras that are worlds above your A40. You'll most probably love using it and get some great shots. Not to mention endless amounts of fun on DPC. |

Thanx Paul, I was just going through some pictures taken with the G5 on DPC- most of them have a lot of purple fringing-especially due to indoor lighting.
I think now im gonna check out the Sony and the Oly.
I like the Oly 5060 looks very rugged and hardcore.

been using the Sony 717 and had few problems with it. Some noise, especially on blue skies and dark green in macro shots, occasional purple fringing. After the initial few weeks I found myself using the manual settings more than the auto......didn't always like what the camera chose. Found the camera to be very reliable, biggest drawback for me was the 3 x optical zoom which wasn't enough for what I wanted it to do.

I used to own the G5. I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I was sad too cuz I loved the shape and feel of it. Indoor autofocus was the worste ever ... and image quality was shotty. |

My wife has the Oly C-5000Z which is the toy version of the 5060 (she got it for $270), I hope the menuing is much improved in the 5060 because the C-5000 does suck, it does take very nice pictures however.
The thing I know to be true of the Oly 5060 is like Sony you will be trapped in the buying specific memory (stick/card) type game. The Oly takes an xDisk Photocard. They are spendy, I got (2) 512 Compact Flashes for my Pro1 for the price of (1) 512mb xDisk card. |

I thought that the Oly 5060 uses CompactFlash cards aswell - both type 1 and 2?

FWIW- I have a Canon G5 that I bought as a backup/travel camera and though I honestly haven't used it much, I also haven't had any big issues with purple fringing, despite what the reviews say. The "difficult lighting" example posted below is unretouched- just resized for web.
I did have difficulty focusing indoors until I realized that the AF Assist lamp was turned off (an odd default?). I think the G5 is a fabulous camera (I used a G2 for years), with great image quality, gobs of manual control, and unusual touches like a ND filter and intervalometer. By comparison, the Sony is very bulky, and I find the Olympus interface awkward in places.
PM me if you want a G5 cheap ;-) (and, no, I'm not just saying these thing to sell you one).

So with all the pruple fringing, bad indoor autofocusing - is it still worth it?
Or should I go for the Oly 5060WZ?

Why not the Fuji S602? It's a fantastic camera - comparable to the f717 but should be a lot cheaper. It's definitely all the camera I could use back when I got to use it. :) I don't own one, but it takes both CF and smartmedia cards and has interpolated 6mp pictures (which really means about 4.5 crystal clear, tack sharp images.) It's superb and my #1 recommendation to everyone looking inside of $600 for a cam.

Can I suggest another option...Nikon D70. The quality of my shots and my DPChallenge entries improved tremendously with my D70.

I would love one-so like err.... can you guys start a hat collection for me to buy one? ;p
hehehe jez kidding.
Not enough money for a D70.
I wonder if anyone wants to get rid of their old EOS D60 ? ;)

Huh? As I said, I didn't find purple fringing to be nearly as bad as some reviews have suggested. Indoor auto-focus is fast and flawless if you turn on the AF Assist lamp. I think any of the cameras mentioned are excellent, and you probably can't go wrong. The G5 is the cheapest of the bunch (under $500).
You might also consider the new Canon Powershot S1 IS. Sure, it's only 3.1MP, but extremely high quality, with a sweet, 10X image-stabilized lens for around $400.
Why not check out the image quality of each camera side-by-side and judge for yourself? |

I checked out the S1 IS - its seriously got a superfast zoom.
But I just want a good camera for creativity, and what ever comes in the box.
I think the ND filter is a cool addition coz the Oly 5060 has a very very limited filter range i think.
