My title sucks! There are many comments also saying so. I submitted the photo early and wanted to come back to give it a better title but never got around to it!!
Hopefully it won't cost me too many points as the picture is great, and doing well.
Everyone, please just judge the picture!!! |

But what's the point of having themed challenges if we judge them based only on picture quality?

This is a photo contest isn't it??
I agree that a picture should be appropriate for the topic, but if we put too much emphasis on the title, then we are giving the non native English speakers an unfair disadvantage. Remember the internet is international, and there are many other languages other than English out there. |

I disagree, I told several people this in PM as well: If English is not your native language, make your title in your native language, at least for a competition where the title is a big issue, like newspaper. I would rather see foreign language titles that fit the images than poorly written English titles.
Also, some of you out there (you know who you are) speak perfectly good English, you just don't bother to properly phrase your titles anyway, and that is disrespectful to the rest of us who have to read the garbage.
My point about judging is not that this shouldn't be about the photos, but that anyone can take a good picture without limitations, given time and resources, but taking pictures that meet the challenge is the whole point of entering here. I don't care how great that flower looks, if you enter it in the "animals" category (unless you have a really clever and obvious reason) I'm not going to give it a good rating.

I still disagree about the title. What if you are a native Thai speaker. You can't write a title in Thai, as it wouldn't be displayed correctly on most of our browsers. Also if you are the only DPC member from Outer Mongolia, & you write your title in Mongolian, then EVERYONE is imediately going to know who you are!!!!
I agree that taking photos that meet the challenge is important. Just try to judge the photo, and don't let the title influence you too much. |

I had this problem while voting and started this thread. I based a small portion of my vote on the title. If I didn't understand or like the title, I mentioned it in my comment and offered an alternative if I could think of one. It is a photo challenge but I'm sorry if my previous experience clouds my voting. That's why I asked in the other thread if I should vote or not. I didn't get any sense that I shouldn't vote from the people that responded then. |

For this challenge, I also think the Headline/Title is important. I had two possible entries for this one (a rarity) and worked on several versions of titles--in the end I submitted the photo that I felt had the best title.
I must say, too, that I've had a great deal of fun voting on this one! There are some folks with a great sense of humor here. One entry makes me laugh everytime I open it...the photo could appear in a newspaper, the headline could too, I just doubt they would appear together. Best humor since the banana challenge!
(There are, of course, some very poignant topics well represented too.)

If the picture was great and the title stunk I deducted 1 point so some good photos got a 7 instead of an 8. Any I scored this way I commented why.
This challenge dictated IMO a "headline"
I felt hypocritical since I do not deduct scores for bad Titles or Border's however I felt this challenge's directives meant for Title to be a significant part of the challenge.
