Before I call Canon service in the morning, I thought I'd ask on this list. I've read of a few people having this problem, wondering if any of you have.

My 70-200/2.8 IS on the 300D this weekend (at my brother's wedding no less!!) started giving an Err 01, and showing 00 as the aperture. Unmounting the lens and remounting will sometimes help. The issues seem to be related to the IS.

Anyone have this problem? I'm assuming I need to send it back. Does anyone know how long Canon takes to turn around a repair on a pro lens like this? It really pains me to send back a nearly brand new $1600 piece of glass. I don't have a backup lens in that range, and that's sort of critical. Any advice from you seasoned veterans at this sort of thing?

I got the same problem with my lens I bought 1 month ago. Going to call Canon tomorrow. It sucks since I`m going away on vacation in 5 days...

Try putting new battery and clean lens contacts?

Exactly! I've had that happen only one time with my 100-400L IS, and it has never happened since.

Done that, it`s a problem specific to a certain batch of 70-200 f2.8 IS lenses, lots of report of this happening on Rob galbraith`s forums.

Does canon have a fix? Just call them up and tell them you have one of the problematic ones? Mine has been doing it a few times, but only when I use the 1.4x extender.

I know ellamay had this issue with a 100-400L IS and her kit lens on her rebel. When I mounted her 400 on my 10D, no such symptoms.
Canon techs encouraged her to send in the Rebel. They replaced the shutter with a new one. It took, I believe, two weeks (via courier to and from Calgary, Alta.). All seems to be fine now.

Well, I've never seen the issue happen with my kit lens, my 50/1.4 or my 17-40L, so I'm very hopeful it's the lens. If it's the camera, I'll be very sad indeed. Two weeks with no camera is like a week with no food!

I shipped it to NJ this afternoon. Can't wait to get it back. Hopefully never to leave my side again.

When the aperture on a Canon shows 00 that means the camera does not detect a lens mounted to it. Which leads me to believe their might be a problem between the contacts on the camera body and the contacts on the lens. I would be interested to know if it is happening mostly on the Rebel bodies or is happening just as often on the 10D bodies.

I'd be happy to test this, if only someone would furnish me with a 70-200L/2.8 IS or a 100-400L IS. ;-)
