I am going on holiday for about a month (to Thailand like every year)
I am taking my Rebel with me...
Normaly I would have enough space on my 512 + 256 + 64 Mb DF cards, but 1 month without my PC is a different story...

What happens if I would shoot my picture in Large format with medium compression. Is that doable, or are there things that I have to considder doing that?

TIA

Peter,

I am not sure what you mean by "large format with medium compression." Is that using the higher density medium setting on the D300?

I usually shoot in the highest res JPG or RAW but I have been in situations where I had to conserve memory and I have found that I get very good results at lower resolutions as long as I don't try to make large (greater than 8X10 prints).

Just thinking that in Thailand, where a lot of memory products are made, you might be able to get a good price on some additional cards or even a portable hard disk.

Have a fun holiday.

I'd consider getting more storage. There is an explanation in a tutorial here: //www.photoworkshop.com/canon/rick_sammon.html

Click on lessons 1-5 (under "Begin Here"), then "new to digital", then on #1 in the lower left. This will explain to you what happens when you shoot at lower resolutions and not the maximum size/lowest compression levels. Afterall, you never know when you'll get a really great picture while travelling and what if you want to make a large print of it later? With 1.6MP or so, you won't get large prints (8x10 or A4). If you shoot RAW, you can get about 130 or so images on a 512MB card. Extrapolate that to whichever size you can afford/find but get the largest you can. That's what I was told and it is SO true. Good luck and have a great holiday in Thailand!

For a month's worth of shooting I'd really suggest springing for one of the many 'image tanks' available on the market. A 10 or 20 gig version should be doable for 250ish if you shop hard enough.

If you know where you are going, and have a way to find out. Check to see if there are any shops or cafes that will, or will allow, you to back up to CD or DVD.

But a mass storage device would be the best option.

The compression really won't be much of a problem, unless it is low. The biggest problem is the potential reduction in print capabilities if you get rid of too much data. Of course, this is only a problem if you want to print (or potentially want to print if you get that once in a lifetime shot).

yeah i think you'd be better off getting an image tank, or one of those that burns your card contents straight to cd. that's probably a better way to spend money than on extra CF cards... more megs per $ that is, and you'd have a virtually unlimited amount of storage ... well just limited to how many cd's you can burn.

i think you'd be better off doing that than to sacrifice image quality. you KNOW you'll miss a shot while you're deleting some to free up space. and proofing on that LCD just isn't good enough.

Definately get an image tank or research internet cafes. I'm pretty sure there are some in Thailand, I've had friends live there and they still had email access.

I'd most definately experiment with your camera before you leave to see how much it affects your photos.

Try about 60 photos in RAW mode on a 512 card.

I get between 85 and 95 RAW files on a 512kb card with the smallest embedded JPEG.

Yeah, even with the 300D fixed RAW embedded JPG setting (medium/fine?) I get about 180 on a 1GB card.

EDIT: for STD (sleepy typing disorder)

Yeah, I guess the # of photos is dependent on the type of jpeg you embed. I always embed the large/fine with my RAW files.

I was flipping through some catalogs and I found a possible solution to your storage problem: the SmartDisk FlashTrax (//www.smartdisk.com/Products/DigitalMultimedia/FlashTrax.asp). It's available in various capacities (20, 40 or 80GB). Looks neat and I remember when I first read about it and I thought it was kinda silly but still was a neat concept. Now that I thought about it more, it really is a great idea especially if you don't want to bring a laptop everywhere you go.

I just bid on a new FlashTrax 40 GB model on ebay - and "won" it (why do they say you won something anyway!) - for just over $400. Now I won't have to cart along my laptop on extended shoots.
