Well, I thought my desat submission would have done better than it did at 5.1. I think one of the reasons I finished on this score was because not very many have probably seen these fish and maybe thought the colours were wrong? There again, it may just be an awfull pic and my eyes only I can see the beauty of this endangered species?
To desat this pic I simply used the magic wand tool to select the yellow, then inversed the selection and used hue/saturation to desaturate all but red, a little tweak of contrast & colours, minimal neatimage, cropping then submission followed by a week of agony watching my score which btw resembles more of a triangle than a bell curve!
So, the submission...
You can catch a glimpse of my Puntius Denisonii (Red Lined Torpedo) here or another members here. there are a couple more of this fish on the main page (most badly edited by myself aka AquariCam. Until recently not a lot was known about this fish so the owner of the forum I administer and myself came up the a short article. |

Although I did not vote on this pic I probably would have given it a 5 or 6. The endangered species would have been lost on me and the backgroud is not very interesting. I would have also liked to see more color on the fish. For me the contrast of color/greyscale is what made this challenge interesting. I do like the idea though. I think I remember seeing a couple of fish shots in this comp. I will check to see how they did. |

Your not alone on that xion :) I'm not on a 'it should have scored higher' rant but just interested why it didn't do as well as 'I' thought. I usually mess up my entry with poor ps'ing and this time maybe spent too much time focussing on getting a picture of 2 of these fish together and the techique than I did of the background. Anyway, the main thing is I like the shot so am happy :) Thanks for your comments. |

They reminded me of "neons"... which look pretty much like the fish in your picture without any desaturation, except they're blue-striped.
But fish are cool! If not really difficult to capture well. Hope you'll keep working on them.

I think it has a lot to with what they see in the picture. If you have created this image and you are about to vote on another image by someone else, of course weather you like it or now, people would compare. I am not saying that others did way better than you. I am not going to go into this now. But I think there are lots of people who learned the technique just for the challenge as well and their approach was in your face colour.
Do I like where I was placed in the challenge? Well the answer is NO. But when I ask myself if I had really wanted to create a brilliant image for the challege, that answer is YES. But if I ask myself if I had given it my best then the answer is NO. So it leaves me nothing to challenge.
edit: typo

If you leave all the colors on both fish and leave the colors off the background and repost I'm pretty sure that a majority of the people would say the new edit would've received a higher score.
IMO the desat that don't work are the ones that just has one little element of a subject in color. Leaving the color on the whole subject makes it more pleasing to the eyes. |
