The honeymoon with my phone camera is long over. Now whenever I take a picture it feels like social media. Hidden algorithms are making decisions for me. I want to go back to controlling the aperture and speed. I don't want any kind of software doing any kind of editing.
That being said, I do want something that's easy to carry around and easy to use and not too expensive. It could be a DSLR but I don't intend on swapping out lenses.
What do you think I should buy? |

I have been thinking about the RX100 VII but have heard the VIII will be coming out soon so I may wait. I’m tired of carrying around a heavy camera bag with multiple lenses. I’m willing to give up quality for something I can fit in my pocket. The quality of point and shoot cameras has greatly improved and computer editing has narrowed the gap even more. |

The compact that everyone really seems to be raving about right now is the Lumix L10 - though at $1500 I'm not sure that qualifies as "not too expensive." For my own money, I've been looking hard at the OLYMPUS Tough TG-7. I've heard lots of really great things about it from people who really love compact portables. It's apparently only owned by one person on this site though... |

I have the Sony RX100 VII also. Great for a light carry when needed. Same as the Lumix L10 cost-wise at around $1500. |

You may be right but it might be worth waiting for just a little while longer for at least 3 reasons: 1) it has been 7 years and 2) Sony is usually at the forefront of innovation and 3) with the incorporation of AI into cameras the improvements will be immense!

I went through this a few months ago. I wanted a smaller camera for ease in carrying around. After inquiring, reading and looking at cameras along with all the opinions.. the Cannon R5 is the best camera on the market. Yes, Nikon shoots a little faster close to equal in benefits.
Anyway, after much research, I will always have my iPhone 17 with me, it shoots RAW for quick images and snap seed edits well. |

Full frame mirrorless => Sony A7II $664.
Add an old school m42 lens for $50 to $200 and you're good to go (adapter is needed but inexpensive).
This setup is fully manual focus and aperture setting. Focus peaking helps tremendously.
If you want to play more with current lenses you can always add those later.
Get the Sony A7 for $100 less, but you lose in-body image stabilization. |

I have just recently traded off my Leica CL because, well, simply because I need the cash but I also need a decent camera for colour so I went with a Panasonic S5D it's full frame, small in size and has the Leica L mount so can be adapted to take your canon lenses and I paid £500 from MPB I kept my L to M and R to M adapters |
