I am one of the Icelanders who was in this competition and the reason we participated is so that we, friends and acquaintances, have fun being together on a team. But if there is a draw for a team, I am definitely not interested in joining.

Great pity but I think there is no other solution.

I think there should be more smaller teams -- four people should be enough.

but why can't people who want to participate not do it together, what's the point?

Solution to which problem?
In a random draw the draw itself will be a big decider on who wins. Some teams will get strong players, others not. Luck will tell.

You guys have outdone yourselves in watering this competition out to nothingness. The cap was already pretty tight for this DPL, so the Icelandic team, that had participated in a few of the previous DP Leagues had to split up and get new players on board. So now you suggest that we cannot be a team again, but dependent on some random team selection. I don´t believe any of us in the Icelandic teams would participate in that.

Well, circumstances have changed and will continue to change in the future—the overall number of participants has decreased, so it doesn't hurt to discuss new possibilities.

And that's also what DPL is: a new opportunity not only to win the competition but also to get to know new people who don't belong to your own peer group. Where I live, I'm pretty much on my own; I depend on connecting with others. My team of DPL 6 was fabulous - lovely people, great communication behind the scenes and always fun. But I would also love to be on a team with one of you nordic people!
It seems to me that you Icelanders (and you're not the only ones) are quite ambitious and primarily focused on success. Of course, I also want to do well, but first and foremost, DPL is just a game!

I have met and worked with many members, on 3 different leagues. It feels really good to know and learn more from all the different people I have met. I thoroughly enjoy the process of working with photographers with different perspectives and styles. The community here is very special, warm and friendly. It is unusual to find this kind of commonality and a great community to share your work with.

If we want to be together, we should be able to... not to be forced to split up. At all times we are free to get to know new people anyway, if we choose to fill teams from the free agent pool.

Good luck to you guys!

I see no reason why people cannot be on teams of their own choosing. Teams of random, of mix and match, of super cool/ice. It is only a game.

Paul, with 4 participants per team how would you determine the team score?

In DPL6 there were 84 participants, some came late and missed out, some would not enroll for DPL7 for any reason. Say we'd finish with 80 participants. With 4 per team there would be 20 teams! And 20 weeks for round-robin! I don't think many could commit full effort to such a long competition.

What's wrong with using either a combination or average of each team's best score in each of the two challenges? And I would make it be by placement or percentile of finish, not the voting score which can vary too much based on topic ...

Due to circumstances beyond members' control - illness, job demands, family situations - people who sign on originally can find themselves unable to participate, whether for a challenge or two or for prolonged or recurring longer time periods. IMO 4 person teams is not realistic.

Agreed. 5 person teams with either top 3 or 4 scores to count would be a better choice IMO.

We had 2 members sick at the same time and one unable to go out to shoot, I think even 5 may be too few. 4 scores out of 7 gives better chance at 0% not becoming part of the team score, 3 out of 4 would make it quite possible. Many DPCers are not so young anymore, myself included.

It looks that the discussion died out again. To kick start it again I have questions/suggestions:

To Mita:
Changing the code to round-robin, 8 or 10 teams is it OK?

To all DPCers:
To make Icelanders and other teams happy could we keep the current system of forming teams BUT with one change - identify "ribbon hogs" and don't allow them to be on the same team? This means that either Wendy and Mark would need split out as well as myself and Lev. Any more ribbon hogs to split?

To Mita:
It would be nice to set a date for DPL7 so we can all plan for being busy with it :)

Based on your feedback and the poll results, we are implementing several changes for the upcoming DPL season. Here is a summary of what to expect:

Team Formation
We received several suggestions regarding team balance, including capping team strength, preventing "super groups" (ribbon hogs), and using draft or random assignment systems.

The Decision: After much deliberation, we are implementing a hybrid system. This combines random assignment with a mechanism that attempts to honor specific requests from players who wish to play together. We will be piloting this system in DPL7.

- The protocol is described on the DPL Rules page.
- Common questions are answered in the DPL FAQ page.

Season Structure
We reviewed suggestions for a more thorough season, higher frequency of play, and the return of mid-season breaks.

1. Duration & Frequency: The season length will depend on the final number of teams. If participation matches DPL6, the full season (regular play + playoffs) will last approximately 24 weeks. (See details here).
2. Off-Season & Timing: We are introducing a one-quarter off-season break (see here). This will cause the season start dates to rotate, and we will assess the impact of this rotation over time. We plan to start DPL7 by the end of Q1 2026.
3. Round Length: While one-week rounds were suggested, we have decided to stick with two-week rounds to maintain the shooting period our community is used to.
4. Scoring System: We will continue using percentile-based scoring. Raw scoring was tried in DPL1 and proved biased toward high-scoring challenges. Percentiles allow for a more balanced comparison across different challenge topics.
5. Playoff Format: We will run the playoffs the same way we eventually did at the end of DPL6. (See details here).

In-Season Changes
1. Roster Management: Replacing non-contributing members mid-season introduces hard-to-manage corner cases. Instead, we will allow teams to draft a new member during the mid-season break. (See details here).
2. Voting: Team members will be allowed to vote on their team's entries once their team has been eliminated.

Post-Season
1. Individual Scores: We are considering a Season MVP (Most Valuable Player) title. We are still settling on details to ensure this does not negatively impact team incentives.
2. Medals: Winning teams will absolutely receive medals and are welcome to show them off.

Team Threads
We received many requests to make team communication more intuitive and user-friendly.

To encourage better collaboration, we are working to streamline the image-sharing process:
- The app now supports direct image uploads while drafting a message.
- We are working to bring this same feature to the legacy web interface to ensure a consistent experience across all platforms.

We consider this feature top priority and a prerequisite for DPL7.
