Do a Google search and you get something like this: "Leading lines are a photography composition technique where natural or man-made lines, such as roads, rivers, or fences, are used to guide the viewer's eye through the image to a main subject."
Crucial points (IMO): lines; natural or man-made; guide the eye; to a main subject.

I present to you my entry, in all its glorious, Brown beauty:

I took this picture for the challenge, deliberately and somewhat awkwardly positioning myself so that the extended arms would visually direct the eye to that bizarre face - which no one can deny is the focal point. For me the pose created compositional lines that led to the most important part of the image.

This post is 100% in fun in terms of result; I knew well before vote 10 that anyone else was going to have to fight me for that 0% and actually enjoyed watching the low scores keep rolling in. Did I really get that many DNMC votes or was it just too bizarre and ghoulish for you (I'm not at all crazy about it myself)? And I am mightily curious about the request for validation during voting . . . any thoughts on that?

The post is not in fun in terms of the topic, and I'm hoping for some thoughtful responses.

Hi Nikki,
As I remember this challenge was not looking for average Leading Lines. The description was looking for some lines like in the movie Conclave. Lines that make beautiful cinematic scenes by moving your eyes around the images, at least that is the thought for me from some of the research I came up with. I wanted something different but time was not on my side so I did same old kind of shot, Rail Road tracks and I actually thought I would come in last but people didn't vote that way and I too was surprised by that.
I gave you a 6 and I thought the arms were leading, the teeth and I liked the seasonal scarry touch. I liked that you saw this challenge kind of like I originally did ~ Think Outside the Box ~ I have been wrong enough times that I do understand your shock! But I get it, for many years I studied film photography, I try to understand the difficulties in what we do and appreciate the artistic value. I am sorry some people can not understand the time, the work that goes into our art and that someone else's thoughts on a topic might be different from our own.

I appreciate the big swing you took with this entry. Honestly, it's a fabulous image. I revisited several times, and in a free study, I would have probably rated it quite high. For me, this was more middle of the pack in my voting because for my eye, the positioning of the arms didn't necessarily register as playing an exceptionally strong role in drawing my eye toward the face as the other compositional elements you're so deftly using--like the lighting and subject placement in the frame on the whole. The lines invite more lateral than depth-related visual attention--again, to my eye.

That said, because this WAS a leading lines challenge, I did pause and look for what you were up to, and I agree wholeheartedly that those arms and perspective choice DO contribute to the overall impact of the image, even if I would maintain your other compositional choices are the stronger elements. And I do want to emphasize my own personal enjoyment of this image: This is a perfect example of where I really wished I could have rated it separately on overall image quality and how well it "meets the brief" for me, personally.

As for the validation request, that surprises me, too. My speculation would be that it has to do with the textural interaction with the background looking like a background swap. Or maybe some of the sharp, contrasty lines in the creatures clothing potentially registering as being generatively introduced rather than original to the capture? I dunno.

Very interesting, seasonally appropriate piece. :-D
