We're not quite done with DPL6 yet but there are many opinions and suggestions on how this current iteration of DPL went. While this is fresh in the minds of many let's gather feedback and suggestions for the next time around.
Thank you for participating. |

Ok, here it goes - based on 12 teams
1) 12 full rounds - with a break at the first half - teams play each other on 2nd half - head to head based on placement during the first league half.
2) playoffs include minimum 3 each from each division (6 teams total) - with 3 playoffs - first playoff is based on head to head - my preference is 4 teams in playoffs (8 teams total)
3) team %s need to be raised to minimally 70/75%
4) players can be replaced during the first half only - regardless of said members current entries/placement - its a captains (and the teams) decision if a replacement member is needed - if the new team member has played in any of the league challenges (not as a league player) their scores will not count until their first entry only after being added to the team. No more team member replacements after the first half of league is played.
5) League needs to start earlier (May/Jun) making it easier for summer play - vacations, school etc - preferably once a year.
I think that about covers it for me. |

I need to think things through a bit, so this is just a quick response.
I wish the entry period was one week instead of 2 weeks. It's a shame to not know how you did the first round before even beginning the 2nd round. That would be a big wish of mine. And I think it would be more fun overall. That's why the last DPC seemed to go so fast, because we didn't know the results for so long, it felt like it was over quickly.
Also, the unfortunate thing is that we cannot easily do things on DPC. Our team went to discord so that we can chat easily, be notified when new posts were there, see answers without having to go check over and over, and to just be able to copy and paste our photos in quickly. It's still really painful posting an image on DPC. And if you don't have a workshop, you're even more limited. But the problem with using discord is we're not on DPC. So we're not looking at the forums, being a part of things. It's not driving people to be members and to be part of the community. Only part of one group. And if you're not happy in the group, then you're really lost. (I'm happy!!!) Isn't there a way of being able to more easily paste photos into a thread? Then we could at least live with the other limitations of a team thread. |

Maybe it would be possible to have a "team folder" which all team members can upload to and view -- bookmark that and it should help expedite the process. |

We use FB Messanger - it works quickly - per-say
ETA: years ago I learned the lesson of posting within DPC (workshop) - therefore I keep our initial posts off site - it works

I think that having 2 conferences is unrealistic. I am suggesting just one division with 8 teams and 7 to 10 members in each team. The matches would go on for 7 Rounds so that each team plays every other team.
The team selection and the scoring of teams would be based on average score, not average percentile. Average of 6 scores would make the team score. The winners would be based on highest average score from 7 matches and not by win/lose. If there is a tie allow more than one winner or run a playoff just with these teams.
Anyway, it is 2am here so it might not make much sense but I really think that one division is way to go. |

To continue, 8 teams with 7 rounds ensure maximum possible participation. It also maintains 2 weeks for shooting which I very much prefer.
More refinements:
1. The maximum score for team formation would be the average of the average scores for the last 10 challenges completed before DPL announcement
2. Apart from the Team Scoreboard there would be also Individual Scoreboard for the Tournament. That way the highest scoring participants would be also awarded
3. Create Tournament Ribbons Blue, Red and Yellow for winning teams and individuals that members could put on their profile pages
4. Run DPL twice a year, Spring/Summer Season and Fall/Winter. This way members from the southern hemisphere (like Australians :) would not be disadvantaged

The last 10 challenges each individual player has completed, right?
So many top-class photographers are returning (or returned for Season 6) just for DPL, who haven't participated in a single challenge in a very long time. If only the last 10 challenges were counted, not the personal ones, these members would start with an average of 0 (regardless of whether it's a score or percentage) which would also distort reality somewhat. |

I meant instead of maximum 60 or 70% for the team have the averaged 10 last challenges team formation maximum score. For the individual participants it could be the same as for DPL6, .last 10 challenges the participants took part in which could be years ago person's last 10 entries.
Thanks, Paul.

It might be clearer if you phrase it as "person's last 10 entries" rather than the number of challenges. |

There's a couple of problems with the average for determining team composition, if you have a high percentage.
1. People with the highest averages just can't fit on most teams. I was on the signup list for quite a long time because people couldn't fit me in.
2. Because of this, there's no way I could be on a team with any of my DPC heroes. There are so many photographers on here that I admire -- but because I have a high average, I'll never be on the same team as any of my DPC crushes.
3. Life has gotten very busy, so I'm not even photographing much this year. But when I got something I loved, I tried to find a challenge that it fit, or a free study. Because of that, my average was artificially high. When I was able to be more active, I entered everything, so I had a more reasonable average.
Could you make a rule that each team is allowed one ringer that doesn't count against their team average? There were so many people that wanted to play together that had problems. That wouldn't solve all problems, but I think it would actually solve quite a few. And yet still would make teams that had a fair chance.

In some sports the highest and lowest scores are discarded from the calculation.
Personally I'm tempted to say chuck the whole team parity concept and just let people who want to work together do so. If the ribbon hogs gang up on us they'll just have to deal with the hit to their karma ... |

I am not sure if you mean that percentiles are better than averages or that you just have a high one either way? ;)
Wendy" "But when I got something I loved, I tried to find a challenge that it fit, or a free study. Because of that, my average was artificially high. "
I did the same and got the opposite result ;)
I guess being a number one ribbon hog has its price but I don't think it should be used for determining approach to DPL7. With the proposal for of up to 10 team members it will be quite easy to have one high scorer matched with a low scorer.

I think you would need a high number of participants to allow discarding of outliers.
If the original Iceland team was allowed to play in DPL6 with their high percentile I wouldn't like to participate. I do like the idea of parity so that the winner is not known in advance and more than one team has a chance to win. |

I have no idea where you can get 10 people for 14 teams - it was all we could do the past 2 years getting 7 players for 6 teams - its just not realistic.
Plus if you add 3 more players per team more team members entries needs to be much higher than 5. |

14 teams? I suggested 8 teams in one conference only. Do you refer to my idea or somebody else's?
See my earlier post:
