this question is more related to electronics in general than photography.

anyway, here's my question. is there any reason why you couldn't use a power inverter instead of buying the car battery charger, which would allow you to use the standard battery charger in the car. the reason i ask, is that on the inverter it says that it has surges up to 150. so would these surges in power be harmful to the charger or battery, since it might not be a consistant flow of power.

If you buy a power inverter or "power center" for your car, which usually plugs into the lighter socket, and then gives you a regular 110v AC outlet, should let you plug anything else into that which would go in a wall socket; battery charger, cell-phone adapter, laptop, etc.

You might want to include a regular power strip/surge suppressor as you would with house current. Also, if you don't run your car while doing this, you can drain your car battery.

You waste electricity as heat loss every time you convert the power, but otherwise it should work. Hope this is what you were talking about :)

yeah, that's what i am talking about. the main thing i was concerned about was the surges in power. the power strip is a good idea by the way.

Yeah ... get a decent one with surge suppression. I try to get ones with the outlets perpendicular to length of the strip so several of those accessory power adapters can fit side by side.

I think CompUSA has some power inverters which already include conditioning and surge suppression and have multiple outlets; something like $60-100.
