He only skied it because as he placed his other foot on the ground the ball bounced into the air due to the terrible pitch, which made him kick it below centre, causing it to rocket over the bar. :(
Shoulda won in normal time anyway, stupid ref.

yeah.....Campbell's goal should be allowed!! anyway...BEckham's sucks at penalty......oh well.....England's got a real disaster keeper as well....in fact, it's quite sad to see England's best keepers are from 3 struggling football clubs! (2 of which have been relegated!!) :( |

So who's photo will be on the covers of the English newspapers tomorrow? The referee's or Vassell's, or maybe Beckham's? |

It really has to be time to introduce VT adjudication for football. I've had enough of the future of a nation's sporting hopes resting on one, sometimes biased, individual's shoulders. Refs just aren't reliable enough to be trusted anymore - except the brilliant Callina of course. Perhaps all refs should ask him for the verdict instead!

Yeh, Rugby does it so why can't Footy? England have lost many a try because of VT footage shown to the ref!

Erm, Beckam had a very bad tournament (Owen came good as predicted by me). Portugal scored from the same penalty spot more times than England, et tu, they won. OK so the 'goal' was good though not given, but England had many other chances to win the game. Its even sadder to think that this is the best 'we' have done in European football outside of the UK since 1972.

And what exactly did James do wrong tonight? (he lost it when at Liverpool but I reckon he is a great goalkeeper)

Well, if I earnt £100,000+ a week I'd expect to be pretty good at my job, and if part of my job was taking penalties I'd have listened to the complaints to UEFA about the penalty spots that were made before the match started!
edited to say, hey, he missed two in this tournament (nuff said)

I did hear people going on about how it was for England during a previous gave. But from the channel I was watching, both teams were on the same pitch. |

Now I'm not a footy fan, but even I know that sticking Beck into a match for a penalty shot is like Shaq in for a penalty shot.
My sympathies to the Brits.

Uh, in basketball that would be a free throw. In hockey they do have a penalty shot ...
But deciding a championship match on any kind of shootout is an abomination anyway, only exiting so TV can have a more certain ending time for their programming schedules. |

...I do actually know that. I was reading the Bertuzzi article on SI.com and obviously had hockey on the brain. :P

Well, that's more sports reading than I get to do these days :)
I followed the Sharks until they went in the tank (also the name of their rink); fortunately baseball has nearly a month to itself now before the NFL/NBA/NHL fall blitz hits ... |
