That’s rather extreme.

America clearly isn’t a monoculture.
03/18/2025 04:05:56 PM · #52
Nor are any other cultures but they are treated as if they were.

Expand on that? There are a couple of ways to read it. Mostly, who's "they" in this context?

All the countries in the world that are dictatorships which is what America is rapidly becoming (see my earlier post about how this is happening). If you think that the damage done can be reversed in 2 years time, you are kidding yourselves.

His niece said that he is the most dangerous man in the world, she is right, she knows her uncle well.

I think that when Trump voters wake up to the big recession, massive unemployment, lack of basic healthcare, etc, it will be too late. And the rest of the world will suffer too but they probably don't care about that.

It's scary, it's disturbing. I hate reading the news everyday. But what's more scary is that there's no unbiased sources anymore. You can't trust the news from either side -- you have to sift through it and try to determine what is real. I've read exactly one unbiased news story recently, and that's it.

I read Australian and Swiss news, there are still some unbiased articles worth reading but most politicians are too scared of Trump to say anything meaningful against him, they worry that Australia or Switzerland will be slammed with enormous tariffs so there is no opposition.

I am currently impressed with the new Canadian Prime Minister but Canada has a much more to lose than just battling tariffs.

He's going to be calling an election this weekend, so let's see where Canada ends up after five or six weeks.

I certainly wouldn't want to badmouth the guy, but I guess I see him as the most vile, egotistical, hate-filled, petty, narcissistic, racist, incompetent, arrogant, idiotic, reckless, rude con man in the history of mankind.

Thanks, Alan, that's what I think too. I hope that more and more Americans will think that and will find a way to get rid of him before he destroys the world.

It is happening now very fast - the Great Depression Mark II

I just hope it will not finish with a war as the previous did although I am not clear at the moment who would be fighting whom.

From Swiss news today:

"At a dinner with members of the Republican Party on Tuesday, Trump said he was pleased that dozens of states, including China, were "doing everything" to reach an agreement with Washington on tariffs. "These countries are calling us to lick our ass," he boasted.

In an explosive context, the billionaire also indulged in an imitation of these supposed calls: "Please, please, sir, find an agreement. I'll do anything. I'll do anything sir." "

HOW MUCH LOWER WILL IT GET???!! It is just ABSOLUTELY unacceptable behavior! It makes me sick :(((

I'm thinking about trying to get a used bathyscaphe (from the OEDILF):

bathyscaphe, bathyscaph, bathysphere by GeneralE (Paul Marcus)

The bathyscaphe sought to enable

Dives deeper than those made by cable:

Bathyspheres needed ties

To descend and to rise.

Now, to search for those monsters of fable!

The bathyscaphe (BATH-uh-skaf) is a self-propelled deep-sea exploration vehicle developed by Swiss physicist Auguste Piccard (1884–1962). Unlike the bathysphere (BATH-uh-sfeer), it needn't be tethered to a surface ship. In 1960, the bathyscaphe Trieste II, then operated by the US Navy, reached the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point in the oceans, about 10,916 meters (35,813 feet), where the water exerts a pressure of 1086 bar (108.6 MPa or 15,751 psi). There were some flounder or sole, and some shrimp, but reportedly no monsters were found ...

- the drivers smile when they give the way
- generally, people smile when we meet them on our hikes

so I feel safe here which is a big one for me.

Yes, some are not that nice but overall the Swiss are the nicest people I have ever met and we have been to quite a few countries. I think they have the wrong image, they are not rich and they are much nicer than most people think. The rich are the foreigners (definitely not me and my husband!) who come to Switzerland for tax reasons. Like Putin's wife and children living in Ticino. That's why we don't go there any more.

PS Ticino is the Italian part of Switzerland on lakes Maggiore and Lugano.

Just to add for those who maybe contemplating moving to Switzerland some more stats:

Switzerland is one of the richest countries in the world. However, wealth is very unevenly distributed: the richest 1% owns 45% of the total wealth

and

66% of Swiss population are renters for life, they never own a property.

It is actually quite amazing how wrong the image of Switzerland is worldwide.

PS I am still happy to live here but we rent the apartment we live in and we are very far from the top 1%.

Yes, that would be the proof that God is on Democrats side ;)

I reread all this thread today and I am still very worried. Few thousand people marched against Trump today, NOT ENOUGH!! Make it many HUNDREDS of thousands before it is too late :(

Actually the preliminary count for April 19th is ~3 million. There were over a thousand protests organized.

The pope died of a stroke soon after he had a meeting with Vance, coincidence?

I saw on the video he took the pope's hand -- maybe smeared on a little of one of those Russian neurotoxins -- gives a whole new meaning to "greasing the palms" ...

When Trump said he was eagerly awaiting Fed Chair Powell's termination I was wondering if he planned to use poison or maybe "accidental" electrocution ...

OMG! Talk about feeding the conspiracy crap. I’m not a fan of Vance, but this is just plain stupid nonsense to post. Get a grip already.

The difference here is that we say these sorts of things with a wink and a nod. I doubt very much that MargaretNet is seriously suggesting that Vance poisoned the Pope's holy water or something. Now, if this were the MAGA folks and roles were reversed, they would believe it to the end of the Earth, and they'd get banners and bumperstickers printed to suggest whatever conspiracy floated in their direction.

No. I think that it’s highly likely that Margaret believes it, and/or she’s intentionally stirring the pot (dangerously). Neither option is hard to imagine any sane choice to make.
