My sister is looking at getting a digi cam for the above price soon. She is forever playing with my 10d and takes some good pics with it. She knows a bit about phography and wants something that will take good photos and has a good degree of manual control with a reasonable zoom lens. Basically she would love a dslr but can't afford one. What do you think is the closest you can get to a dslr quality and control for this price?

a totally biased view, i know, but really, i've been nothing but besotted with my S50. And now, it's been upgraded (called the S60) and should be even better. it's 388 on pixmania (but you should probably add a decent memory card and spare battery to that, and it will also be without english manual, but they're easily downloadable off the canon site). you can still get the s50 (silver 260 quid) or mine the s50 "noir" - it's black, 414 quid but comes with a brilliant 1 Gb microdrive card.

I just had experience with Fujifilm digital cameras before I got my new Rebel two days go, so I can only offer limited suggestions.

The Fujifilm s7000 would be a good choice I think. It retails at B&H for $709.95 with a $100 mail-in rebate, which would fall into the price range you are looking at.

Here is a review.

If your sister could stretch a little further, she could get a Sony F717 for £429 from InternetCamerasDirect..

Other than that, it's worth looking on ICD for each manufacturer, and as they're ordered by price, just look at cameras in the price range and compare features.

What about the Minolta A1? It has lots of manual control, a zoom lens with good range, nice camera. If I hadn't falled in love with my drebel, I'd still have mine but alas, I sold it to pay for the drebel!

the olympus c750 has been treating me well, manual mode allows you to change the shutter from 1/1000 to 16seconds, aperature from 2.8 to 8, lots of flash modes, hot shoe for external flash, 10x optical zoom. gotta get myself a 300d soon ::drools::

Consider the Panasonic DMC-FZ10. It's only 4MP but has all the manual controls and the Leica 12x zoom with Image Stabilization is impressive. It is slowing gaining a reputation for image quality better than it's initial reviews gave credit for. Unless you sister is planning on attempting really big prints the 4MP shouldn't be much of a drawback. The FZ10 comes in silver or black and can be found on the web for prices well within your range.
