Chicago trip scheduled for July 2nd weekend...

Well, I have officially made a hotel reservation for the Holiday Inn City Centre, near the Navy Pier, just to let everyone know :)
And, are the fireworks on Saturday night? And, does anyone have any ideas on the boat tour? Which ones do we have to sign up for ahead of time? Should we just decide this when we get together, or does no one want to go?

Ken - did you make reservations for the boat tour? I have 2 more people to add, Quentin and Camilla Robinson.

If you haven't yet done so, please set up a reservation for the group. Pick a tour, I'm sure whatever you decide will be fine with everyone.

Since no one has responded about Friday night, I am chaging my plans a bit. Anyone who is coming is welcome to join us.

Since we are staying right off Magnificant Mile, we (Aprils, Macmillans and Robinsons) will window shop and photograph in that area Friday evening and go out to dinner as a group. Probably try to get some night skyline shots, too.

I still plan on early Saturday morning strolling as well and then will meet up with the group at Navy Pier at 11am as planned.

Anyone who is interested in joining me on Friday, let me know, either via this thread or email.

I think that I will not be doing the Botanical Gardens on Sunday. (I don't think that my husband will be able to stand millions of plants and a bunch of shutterbug photographers at the same time!) Still on for Saturday, though!

We aren't supposed to meet until 11 am, so if you don't have to drive that far, you can still make the saturday morning cartoons! :) I am on for Saturday, 11am.

So I take it that ALL of us would like to do the boat tour? I need the numbers ... please also indicate what boat tour - the Architectural Foundation Tour ($25) or any of the smaller tours ($18). All of them are ok. I will go to the dock again this afternoon.

Update: for Windella boat tour (windellaboats.com) - combined river and lake tour - we just have to be there an hour before (or a little bit earlier this time of the year) to purchase tickets ($18.00):

Trip schedule:

1:15 PM
2:00 PM
3:00 PM
4:30 PM

This is a 90 minute combined tour of the river and lake. Similar schedules for other boat companies. They told me that we have to take the tours before 5 pm because of the fireworks.

Mercury Boats - the same arrangement:

A guided tour through Chicago's downtown river and harbor front. Enjoy lively commentary on 17 bridges, 82 buildings and landmarks. Experience the famous Chicago River locking system as you enter lake Michigan. Daily 10:00 and 11:30 am; 1:30, 5:30, 7:00 pm plus 8:30 summer weekends. Adults $18; kids under 12 - $8.

No reservations needed; they sell tickets 1 hour before scheduled tour.

I suggest that we take these tours because it goes to the lake - you can see the lock system of the river and will be able to take photos of the skyline from the lake.

We can walk from the Navy Pier to the dock.

I am wondering which boat tour & what time will you all be taking. I am not too fond of boats & going through the locks freaks me out. will chose that time to head back to the burbs. I am SERIOUSLY bummed. I just found out that I'm gonna have to work on Saturday... I may be able to come down Sunday morning, but won't know till Sat. Nite. Who will have email in Chicago so I can arrange to meet on Sun if possible?

Hmm, so would it be alright if I said I may have found babysitters for the kids and my wife and I are going to try and make it over there Saturday? Can somebody PM with their cellphone, and I'll reply back with mine. My wife is supposed to confirm the babysitter today, but it looks good.

yup.

the Robinsons, Macmillans and Aprils all got a great deal on Priceline a the Sutton Place Hotel - $125 a night (regularly about $225). My wife reminded me, though, that we are probably going to get killed on the parking fee at the hotel, so keep that in mind.
